I’m interested in studying abroad, but I’m nto sure how it all works. Do you go by yourself to some foreign country? If there are some students from your school, do they let you know who they are so you can have some company?

I think they bunch you with a group of students from your own school or another school.

Usually you have to fill out applications and such, and pay fees/tuition, for a specific program to a specific place at a specific time (aka University of So-and-So program to London, England from June 10-July 10, or whatever). The fees often times include airfare so then everyone going to that specific program will be on the same plane at the same time.

It can vary considerably depending on the school and program. There are programs where you will go over and spend most of your time with other people from your home school and may even be taught by a professor from your home university. These are typically shorter programs, like over the summer.

There are programs where you’ll go mainly to learn the language and will spend most of your time in language classes with other foreign students, although not necessarily all Americans or all from your home school. There are programs where you’ll go and take classes with other local students, so you wouldn’t have too much contact with other Americans in your classes. In both of these cases, you would likely have contact with the university’s international students’ office, which will help you meet other international students and navigate the new university and new city.

What you choose is up to you and what you’re most comfortable with.
