If I want to take the ACT in April and SAT in May is it a bad idea to start studying now for both tests simultaneously?
Not at all.
There’s a lot of overlap between the two so it might actually be more beneficial to study for them simultaneously. In general, ACT grammar is somewhat easier but ACT math covers more content - make sure you know what exactly is covered by each test!
