Studying Tips

For someone who pays attention in class but can’t seem to have information stuck in their head like a few others can. I’m always the one studying extra, stressing out the most, and lost.

How many classes do you take? Any honors or APs?

A big part of the answer is to figure out your own personal learning style.

For me, it’s writing. I’m much, MUCH more apt to remember something I’ve written down. So, for example, if someone gives me directions over the phone, I write them down. I don’t need to bring the paper with me, just writing it down helps me

I also tend to remember things that make sense, and that colors the way I teach math. The other day in Geometry, we had just started the Area chapter, and I drew a parallelogram with one diagonal. That explained why the area of a triangle is HALF the base times the height, or HALF absinC. (Because a triangle is HALF a parallelogram.) I saw a couple of lighbulbs go on; those kids will remember those formulas because they make sense.

Some kids learn best through the use of mnemomic devises or by song (Like the quadratic formula or the 50 states song. I bet you can find lots of those on youtube and teachertube.

I always recommend condensing notes. A 300 page notebook is impossible to study from But a few formula sheets, combined with a 10 page outline of those 300 pages is a lot more manageable. Would that work for you?
