Stuff worth SPLURGING for

Oh, Mamabear, wish I’d known you were on Kauai, I’d have taken you out for coffee or a drink! Hope you’re enjoying your Hawaii vacation!

Fluevog shoes.

This is a fun thread, GMT. Thanks for starting it!

live music and good seats it it’s not standing room only
if it is standing room I splurge on time in line to be in the front

Now and then I’ll splurge on a timeless clothing item because it “call out my name” and makes me happy. I just splurged on a Pendleton coat. It was on clearance at the rack and I had a Nordstrom Note, a Rack gift card and some Christmas cash. The remaining out of pocket was still a splurge because the last thing I need is another coat. The coast before discounts and gift money was $550 which is way over my splurge price point for a coat so it made the circumstance seem even more perfectly aligned for it to be mine.

@BunsenBurner, I just moved to Seattle a month ago. Have seen Fred Meyers, but have not been in one. Will check it out.

Both H and my primary care docs went with MDVIP within the last couple of years. We had been with these docs for decades, they are excellent, and both H (somewhat) and I (significantly) have health issues, so are relatively “high maintenance” medically. (Plus my doc’s pro-activity saved my life twice, no kidding!) We considered switching docs with this change, but decided to stay with ours, at a cost of a couple of thousand $/year each for the dues.
This is a true splurge, as the dues are not covered by insurance, but we decided that excellent medical care is worth the expenditure for us.

P.S.
I do admit to feeling bad that many patients can’t afford this program, and have no choice but to leave these excellent docs.
The docs feel it allows them to practice/spend the time with the patients that they feel is appropriate.

@VaBluebird our Kerig is like 4 months old. I think that’s the 2.0?

I also splurge on live music for the kids

Never heard of Fluevog shoes - had to use Google; a caricature of shoes!

^To be fair they aren’t all so peculiar. That looks like something the Wicked Witch should wear.

This is similar to my definition, which is something that is an exception to my usual cheapness.

Hiring a professional (the proprietor of an animal control company) to set traps for the raccoons that invaded my attic, instead of attempting to trap them myself using a trap on loan from the city; and then having that same person cover up the hole the raccoons tore in the roof, instead of having my husband attempt another “fix.”

Getting people to do work around the house, like plumbing, hanging doors and so forth, that I would rather not do.

“This is similar to my definition, which is something that is an exception to my usual cheapness.”

That’s me, too; there are certain things where I passionately believe in “invest in quality for the long run” (clothing, exercise, college and travel being in that category) and a lot of categories in which I really don’t care. I’ve already mentioned that I’m not particularly a foodie, don’t particularly have any gourmet food / wine indulgences.

Other things I am cheap on include electronics - while I’m fully up to date and proficient in terms of iPhone/iPad, etc. my main TV is still one of those Dark Ages TVs - maybe 25" with the big thick back (by which I mean not a flat screen) and I don’t have any kind of stereo system or speakers in my house at all. I buy basic cable and have never done anything on demand. I know when this TV bites the dust, there is a whole new world of TVs and devices and choices and platforms so forth that I will need to get schooled on!

@LBowie - I second Fluevog shoes! And it’s the big sale month…

Also, good pine nuts. Having had that horrible “metallic mouth” reaction to cheap pine nuts from China, I have to comb the earth to find ones that are from Europe or California. They go for about $27/pound and are worth every delicious bite!

I was raised by parents that lived through the depression. They passed on their spending habits to me. I sometimes refer to myself as frugal instead of cheap.
With that, even though I do not work full-time I keep my cleaning crew every other week. Just nice.

Good tools and John Deere riding lawnmowers, professional grade, not the Home Depot/Lowe’s level. Fresh fruit, although unfortunately the quality this time of year is poor.

Not a huge splurge, but so glad I bought the more expensive “ultra quiet” dishwasher when it was time for a replacement. Kitchen right next to family room and it makes a huge difference, can’t even hear it running when standing right in front of it.
Of course, I wouldn’t have heard the old one either if I ever remembered to set the delay cycle!

@rosered55, that raccoon expenditure sounds more like a necessity to me!

@intparent, my husband thinks he can and should fix everything himself, even though he lacks the skills to do so and doesn’t live in our house anymore. That mentality makes almost everything feel like a splurge for me!
