That’s pretty sweet.
Will Costco book your flights as part of the cruise? Or are those booked separately?
$1500 is a great incentive
We are getting a large amount back from Costco for last year. We are going to spend it on alcohol for D1’s May wedding.
I do all my auto stuff at Costco- tires, needed a new battery last year, etc. And I did a sweet deal on eyeglasses (I’ve always been too cheap to buy prescription sunglasses… but wow, what a difference with progressives…)
I don’t like doing grocery shopping at Costco- I always end up eating 30 cookies or three lbs. of whatever just because it’s in the cabinet.
But the big ticket stuff- wow. A new desk chair for my home office (the model I wanted, less than half of the price at Staples and I know the cheapie ones at Wayfair aren’t worth it), a set of folding chairs for big family gatherings, I could go on but you get the gist. That rebate will be gone in an instant if you need something big. I have my eye on a new garage freezer- the one I have is ancient, rusty, and an energy hog so I use it sparingly… but the new models at Costco-- WOW.
This was pre-Covid - my husband booked our flights separately but can’t remember whether it was something Costco offered.
Here’s my situation with the Costco Visa. Years ago when we signed up, DH was the primary and I was authorized user because he had the FT job.
He never goes to Costco and never uses the Visa. DD wants to be the other person on our Costco account. That is not a problem, they changed our Costco account so that I am the primary and she is the secondary.
But our current Costco Visa card MUST be attached to a Costco membership or it automatically closes. They told me this at the desk and I just figured I’d open a new one with me as primary.
The thing they DID NOT tell me is, I have to forfeit my rewards when our original Costco card closes! It states very plainly that the card MUST be open on February xx in order to get the reward.
But they are going to close the card on January-something because it is no longer associated with a Costco account.
I am actually thinking it might make sense to open another Costco membership for $50 because the rewards are a few hundred dollars! Wouldn’t that make sense?
Since your membership is $120, I would weigh that against the rewards you would lose.
I think a nonexcutive membership is $60 not $50.
This is common with most (if not all) rewards cards. When you close a card with travel points, you any points that you have left on that card.
I was not able to get cash for my last rebate check. I think they are changing up some things.
We got window shades via Costco last year and got a 20% store card. Paid for lots of our prescriptions! We weren’t able to cash that card out.
When was that that you couldn’t get cash? What time of the year? And was it because the cash would have been a large amount? How did you redeem it - transfer to a bank account or Costco purchases only??
We did something similar when we went on a cruise pre-Covid. I could look at the Norwegian website and pick out the exact cabin(s) that I wanted -the price on the Costco website was the same as the NCL website. But Costco threw in additional benefits - a photo package, a speciality dining package and a Costco rebate card. No brainer to book with Costco.
Some purchases through 3rd parties include Costco gift cards. That is different than the Visa rebate. You should have been able to cash your Visa rebate check, or direct deposit it into your bank account, without making any additional purchase. If it is a large check, you may need to cash it with a manager at a separate terminal.
There are lots of cards to choose from. If you like Apple like us, they have a cashback Mastercard card that gives you 2% every time you use Apple Pay. 3% for Apple store/online products, Exxon, Panera Bread, and a few other places. The points are immediately available as Apple cash on your phone where you can save it to your bank or just spend it directly. We’ve used that apple cash for Costco purchases, since Costco doesn’t accept Mastercard. The downside is that it’s made to work only with an iPhone.
The “shop cards” that are rebates from Costco service providers can only be used in store.
However, I tried cashing my Executive Member rebate (about $180) in November and was told they are no longer cashing them. This may vary from one Costco to another, but I had been able todo this in previous years and couldn’t this time. I hope cashing out returns as an option!
Will also mention that Costco car rental rates are great! They beat our USAA and AARP discounts. Just had two rentals with them on our anniversary trip (and you can take the car into Canada for $7-ish one-time (NOT daily) fee.
As a Brooklynite without a car, I use Costco car rental all the time. Among its many benefits, I love, love, love that a customer can cancel up to the last second. I have a baby shower to go to at the end of January–booked two rentals, one for one day (24 hrs) and one for two. I will cancel the one I don’t want, and book it one more time to see if the rate went down. Plus adding an extra driver is free.
Big fan of costco car rentals here too. Have always rented, especially for our girl-only weekends. Easy to add one of my girlfriends as the additional driver.
But recently, for our family trips, we’ve switched to using National rental with H’s status. Three main reasons - (1) we can walk out there to the lot and pretty much pick any car we want (2) they let him add upto 8 drivers without any additional fees so both kids are added and (3) their price beat Costco’s !! I was skeptical, but it worked so well the last two trips.
Keeping with the ‘stupid’ title, I have some questions I could not find on Costco’s website.
My gold star membership is with H also as additional card member living in the same household.
Does the Costco Visa require I make the application? And by H having a card from my primary membership- does H also get a Costco Visa card (same number as mine) from the same account?
The primary Costco member will be primary card holder. The other will be an authorized user. They both will get their own Visa cards linked to the same account but with different numbers. Convenient when one card is lost/stolen so the other card is still usable while the lost/stolen card is being replaced.
Don’t remember many details about the application process as it has been a while. We got our Visa cards as replacements of the Amex that was discontinued by Costco. I believe primary member had to apply.
I don’t think that is something that should vary from store to store. It isn’t up to a manager’s discretion.
I have had no problem cashing my Executive Member rebate in the store.
