I have found that I can get the answer to anything here.
I’m stumped and this is so stupid I can’t believe I can’t figure out the answer to my question.
All of my banks are out of town and I do everything on line. I hardly ever need to be in a physical bank. The nearest branch is 3 hours away.
I sold something for $1500.00 and I was given cash for this. I’d really like to deposit the cash into my bank account. What would be the best way to get cash into an out of town bank? I usually deposit any miscellaneous checks via the in line app. It’s really easy but cash… what do I do with that?
I mean I guess we could use cash instead of our credit cards but I do like to track where our expenses are (not as good as @ChoatieMom but still). Besides they are $100 bills and people hate to make change.
You should be able to deposit the cash at an ATM. You might end up with a fee if it is a “foreign ATM”, but it would probably just be a few dollars.
My ex-H often pays in cash when he is paying me for something, and usually in large bills. That is what I do with them, hate to present them at a store.
Problem is that $100s may not be helpful in that situation. I do agree that getting change for a few and keeping that cash for emergencies isn’t a bad idea, but I’d do it ahead of time. I’d probably do it when I’m spending over $50 somewhere anyway. Although some stores won’t tske large bills.
Go to any bank and change some of it to smaller denominations if you want to just use it for spending or keeping as disaster money when the banks etc. are non operational.
Or… you could go to any bank and turn the cash into a money order or cashier’s check, stamp it “For Deposit Only” and deposit to your bank account by mail, or via your bank’s app/scanner thing.
I live very close to my credit union so wouldn’t have the “where to deposit” problem. But here’s what I would do with $1500 in $100 bills at this time of year. $100: Thanksgiving food shopping. $100: winter holiday (Christmas or other) dinner shopping. $800: cash gifts for my daughters for Christmas. $200: in the desk drawer for emergencies. $300: shopping for Christmas presents.
Seems the correct answers are already above, so I will just add puffery…That would be in my secret money drawer, no question…and handy for those things I want to buy that are way more than hubby could ever imagine, so I use cash with the credit card to “disguise” the price. Ya, I’ll admit to it (and confess to a problem with designer handbags). Or use it for $100 gifts. Always handy to have some hundreds laying around (again secretly is better). Insert evil laugh here.
@CADREAMIN we sold a car and received cash. For whatever reason we hid it -probably going on vacation or something - and then forgot about it, if you can imagine. We found it a couple of years later while cleaning out a closet. We now put any extra cash in a safe. No more hiding in closets or drawers. I agree, though, that it’s fun to have something hidden away for a surprise or emergency.
If any of your ‘banks’ are credit unions, some are in a network and you can make deposits at other CU branches. I have two CUs and one is in such a network so I go into another CU near me and pay the visa or make deposits.
If that’s not the case, I’d get someone to write you a check for the money. Do not buy a money order as that’s just the same as cash and you’d be mailing it without any safeguards. You could also buy gift cards for your grocery store. Sometimes you get bonus gas points for doing that, so you are earning a bonus even if losing credit card points.
If the credit union scenario doesn’t work out, you’ll just have to pay things with it. I’d just use it for groceries, that way it will be easy to track. You will just know your grocery receipt goes into your program in the Cash and Checking area.
