Stupid Mistakes in Math

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can bring up my 710ish (-4) math score to 780(-1)? I have dont Dr. Chung’s book and feel I have a solid grasp on all of the concepts but every time I just make some stupid mistake. I am at the point where I have plateud in my imporvment and no matter how much more I practice I seem to get a 700-720 on math on my practice tests.

If you are really plateauing at around 710 after a lot of practice and understanding, then maybe that is as good as you are going to get. You should be happy with a 710, it is an excellent score, no matter what any of the other geniuses on here tell you. People get into top colleges with less than that, after all, about half of the accepted students are below their average!

When you’re done with a section, use the time left to check your answers. You will probably discover your mistakes then.

If you’ve been relying too heavily on brute-force math, see if you can’t verify your answers using some test-specific techniques, like the age-old plug in. If you’ve been using techniques, try to verify your answers with algebra.

It’s very difficult to catch your own mistakes if you only do problems one way…you’ll just follow your reasoning right down the wrong road again. If you have multiple approaches to problems, you’re less likely to make silly errors.

Also, if you really are only making “stupid” mistakes, ones that you understand the answer afterwards, then what can help is to try to spend less time on each problem, and then go back and recheck the “easy” ones that you usually make stupid mistakes on. It makes a difference when you go back to an older problem rather than spend more time on each one.
