Stupid mistakes on organic chem 1 exam. Test Anxiety

I got an 80 on my organic 1 exam. I made stupid mistakes. I understood all the concepts. (it was on mechanisms and the products formed between alkenes and protic acids, water, and so on…I understand everything I got wrong. For instance…naming a compound and forgetting to put that it’s cyclo. Just stupid stuff like that!!! GRHH I’m not stupid! I guess I just need to slow down a bit and go over the tests when I’m done. I do have test anxiety and I believe it plays a big role in determining whether I get that A, or a B in this case. Does anyone else have this problem?

Why are you freaking over an 80, just do better next time, relax…

man. If I had a dime for all the times I came thisclose to naming a compound correctly, but then forgetting the “di” or the “cyclo”…!

But anyway. An 80, in most organic courses, is pretty good. Relax. You already know you need to slow down and review your exam–especially important in organic where you need to remember little details.

You’ll be alright. I did something similar on mine as well; on the easiest problem on my test, for some reason I had circles on my mind, so I drew cyclo-something-butane when it wasn’t supposed to be a circle. Ended up with a 91 (would have been a 96 if I wouldn’t have messed that up). Class average was 80 so my score was pretty good, but not great.

If it makes you feel better, I got a 78 on my first  There were 8 points that I legitimately did not know how to do (the questions our Professor call “hard” expected 10/300 to get). The rest were stupid mistakes. Frankly, I think I went in too confident because it had all this hype of being “hard”, but is actually a very manageable class. As long as you still have more exams, you should be fine and get that A, just be sure to allow yourself enough time to redo/check the test - at least that’s what I’m going to try. Plus, not sure about you, but we have 3 exams at 100 each, then a 250 point final… so I’m really more worried about the final, not these tests.
