Stupid question, but Rank Squared?

[Admission > Admission Statistics](<a href=“Home - Computing Services - Office of the CIO - Carnegie Mellon University”>Home - Computing Services - Office of the CIO - Carnegie Mellon University)

Does the rank squared pretty much mean the average rank of their students when they were in high school?

Hahahahhahahaha.
That’s not squared that’s a reference to a footnote :p

Oh wow lol, now I feel like an idiot. So as a person in the top 18% of my school, do I stand a chance at CIT or Tepper?

Don’t worry, my rank is even less xD
As long as your GPA/SAT/ECs are good, you should be fine. lol. Anything that is “OK” should be balanced with one awesome. :p

Rank importance is dependent on your high school. The committee will know how hard your school is.

If you attend Harvard High School or one of those silver-spoon-in-mouth types (Phillips, Exeter, etc) then a low class rank is hardly a big deal at all. Ditto with other top high schools.

If you are like me and came from Ghetto Dawgs High School, then an 18% class rank is probably not as good of an indicator.

What if everyday you wake up, go to school, and swear you are in Asia… lol xD
It’s a public though… but a top 100.
