Stupid Question haha

Ok so I’ve had a debit card this year but haven’t used it at all except for buying groceries and withdrawing money. I know that there’s a pin number at the supermarket you have to answer when making purchases. How do/Can you use your debit card at places where there is no place to enter your pin number? Probably a stupid question but I was just wondering haha

They will run it through as a “credit” - meaning that you will sign the receipt like a credit card. The money will still come out of your bank account.

I always request that my debit card be processed as a credit card. My bank will charge me if it goes through as a debit. Go figure . . .

FYI, it costs the store more in processing fees if the debit card is run as a credit card, so some may decline to do so. (Yup, retail store owner speaking.)

I have noticed at fast food drives throughs, if you hand them a debit card, they swipe it and hand it back to you…no pin # or signature required. I noticed this at Chik-Fil-a recently. It goes through as a debit.

It really depends if it is a straight debit card or a card with a credit company attached. There will be a Visa or Mastercard logo on the card if you can use it as a credit card. The credit card covers an overdraft, should that happen, so sometimes the bank doesn’t issue the credit card type. If yours doesn’t have the logo, ask at your bank if they will upgrade your card.
BTW, I understand some businesses do not require a pin up to a certain amount purchase. That is probably why the fast food restaurants are able to not have your pin. We all need to be extra careful because of this.
