Stupid question: Premed

What exactly does it mean to be a 'premed' student? Because I know west-coast don't have a 'premed' type of course. I heard that you just basically take all the required classes and then apply for a med school after graduation. But I'm not really sure what's it all about.

My rather old-fashioned Asian family told me that there's no future for a bio student if I don't study medicine afterward, well, no money-making future at least.

You're right. There's no real "Pre-med" track in UCSD. People denote that themselves to that others can see where they're headed. Honestly, such a small percentage of the people who consider themselves pre-med even get into any MD/DO schools. A few others go towards OD/DDS, but many really never do anything with their degree.

Pharm, Opt, Dental, etc., are all lucrative ventures, too.

Uh, what's a MD/DO and OD?DDS? clueless
