May sound ridiculous, but I need to solve this problem so I will ask anyway…

The remote on one of our tv’s (not the nice shiny new main one
) seems to be shot. Replaced batteries (2 sets) and still not working - not any of the buttons.

Can I just buy a replacement generic remote at Target or something? Will one of those Universal Remotes work??? I know the point of one of those is to function for more than one electronic, but I really just need (well, my husband NEEDS) a functioning remote for this tv!!!

Yes, unless you have some really unusual model, a generic replacement remote will operate all your electronics. We’ve gone through several, and the last time, I even bought his and hers, because H changes the channel to the most obnoxious political shows imaginable then falls asleep with the remote clutched in what I call “the grip of death.” So I have my own.

Ours will run satellite box, TV, and DVD. It also used to run the VCR. Comes with a book of codes for all the various makes of electronic equipment. Sometimes it takes a while to find the right code, so make sure you mark them or write them down when you find out the correct code. And DON’T throw the instructions away. Some brands are quirky to set, and they do occasionally become unprogrammed.

This TV is probably 10ish years old…one of these generic remotes will still likely work???

^^ My oldest tv is over 20 years old, it works fine with a generic remote.

Yes - the generic remotes usually work well. I prefer it to the regular remotes. I currently have a “Universal Remote Control” model WR7 that I use to control everything. It works pretty well and isn’t that expensive but you can get cheaper remotes if you want one just for the TV.

Ten year old TV? Perfect for a Universal (i.e., generic) Remote … under $10.

BTW, online remote prices for specific TV models are pretty reasonable. DW keeps “right-placing” the remote for our flat-screen TV … $125 from our local retailer, $35 online.
