Stupidest thing I ever did...I seriously need help.

So…I was looking for one-to-one tutor job in craiglist,

and I got a response from someone. He or she just asked me my phone number(and only phone number) because s/he wanted to talk to me. (and never called)

so I did give my phone number, but right after that I realized what kind of goddamn stupid thing I just committed. I gave a phone number to a random stranger in craiglist??? Oh my god…I must have been out of mind after I had heated argument with my sister.

All I gave was my phone number, and I heard that people can reverse-track my phone number and find my address…which sounds absolutely creepy and dangerous. I know, I did foolish thing without right mind, and I don’t need another criticism from people because I already am aware of my idiotic action. The fact that my hometown is the safest place in the state also took part in my action.

What on earth should I do???I am so worried…I am leaving to college next week and it will just be my mom-who can’t speak English well-at home. Should I report to police officer? Or to whom should I seek for help?

Just relax-first of all. What’s done is done and the police can’t do anything unless the person commits a crime.

have a conversation-cautiously-with this person to figure out what their intentions are.

If they DON"T communicate us whatsoever, should I just ignore it?
For example, can they access-for example-my bank account and all the personal information with just phone number? I doubt phone number is sufficient to dig everything about me but I am still nervous.

Unfortunately you are at risk for putting the ad on Craig’s list to begin with. Really using the internet at all makes you susceptible to identity theft. Computer wizes can track anything with one post. But really those kind of people are few and far between. If this person tries to contact you, communicate with them and see where it goes from there.

If they don’t communicate with you, just be sure to be meticulous when checking your bank statements and know exactly how much is in your account. When you withdraw, record it.

I wouldn’t be too worried just be aware and cautious.

Don’t make this into some international crime spree sort of thing. Maybe they found another tutor. Or went on vacation. Or…

Anyone can find your freaking tel number in a phone book. And c’mon, that includes your address. That’s not how criminals get your more personal data. You’re more at risk doing an online transaction with a credit card. Or hey, using your card at Target or Home Depot.

Look up your own phone number online and you’ll see how little into is available.

I was able to find someone’s address with just their name. Of course I kinda knew the general area they lived in, but it just goes to show how much info is on the internet. A real criminal won’t need a phone number to do something bad.

I doubt much can happen with a phone number…and as others mentioned—so much is out there anyway.

One time, I goggled myself using my nickname and married last name with my current hometown besides getting a lot of hits that matched that I also got a hit that used my full first name (not nickname) with my maiden name (not married) and the address where I lived almost 30 years ago! It also associated me with my parents and siblings! Scary stuff!

The stuff you have to really worry about is SSN, bank account numbers, etc. Always be wary and alert, but in this case don’t be in a panic. There’s not much they can do with a phone number (they certainly can’t get to your bank accounts! )

Yeah, this is nothing. You really only have to worry about debit/credit cards and SSN. Names, addresses, and phone numbers are only useful if someone wants to physically harm you. The second group is virtually useless to anyone trying to take anything of your identity without having one of the first group items.

So far nothing happened. Thanks

I am told that in the olden days, before the magma cooled and while dinosaurs roamed the Earth, there was a thing called a “phone book,” where strangers could look for your phone number and find your address.

I’m sure the person just changed his/her mind. There is much in life that will cause stress; this should not one of them.

@skieurope - I remember those prehistoric days… :wink:

I still get 'em. Straight to recycle.

You may be getting overly paranoid, but I guess in the future just give an e-mail address instead.
