Sturdy footlocker/trunk--does anyone know where to buy one online?

I am looking to purchase a footlocker/steamer trunk sort of thing. The ones I have found in my local stores are really flimsy. Does anyone know where I can find a sturdy one on line?

Thanks!

This site is terrific:

I have one that was my father’s from WWII. It is made of 1" solid oak and must weigh at least 50 lbs empty. Get a light, flimsy one.

I purchased one for my son just last month at [College Trunks. Protect your dorm valuables with a college trunk.](http://www.dormtrunks.com).

I was very happy with it, it’s good and sturdy and reasonably priced I thought. Well made with good latches and metal corners. It has an optional wheel kit which I highly recommend because this thing is not light to begin with, filled it will be to heavy and bulky for one person to carry up any stairs.

Hope that helps.

You are probably not interested in this, but the trunk we bought at Target lasted 4 years of college and 3 summers’ internships after being shipped by air. It does now have duct tape on a corner.

The Container Store has some: [The Container Store > Search Results](http://www.containerstore.com/search/searchresults.jhtml;jsessionid=PK410WSY0XN0VQFIAILCM54AVABBOJVC?search=trunk)

The Army/Navy store in our town has some good ones, too.

Walmart has the Contico storage locker, which I’ve found to be pretty sturdy.

edit: It also has built-in wheels, which makes it easier to move around when full and heavy.

From Music Major forum comes this recommendation(and they have been featured on some popular news and information shows also). They come in many, many colors, have options like wheels and come with the sliding insert on the top for no extra charge:

OOPS, looks like MeKimber posted this link first, but I’ll leave it since the other thread had several satisfied customers!

I had a few trunks in my life, one inherited and two others bought for camp and school. I threw all of them away. Really, I would not buy one for my kid unless it was necessary (like a camp where they want you to send a trunk of stuff). If you need to ship stuff, boxes can work well, and you can wrap fragile stuff to avoid breakage. If you are going by car, the large rubbermaid type plastic containers weigh alot less, and can be stacked in a closet - easier to store than a trunk. I have seen a few that can be padlocked as well.

BTW the regular key for the trunk opens all trunks (it has been my experience), so you will need a padlock if you want to safely store things in it.

Thanks for the information. I would be interested in the flimsy ones except flimsy does not necessarily equal cheap–the ones at my local wal-mart are $60. The reason I want one is not just extra storage in a small (very small) dorm room but storage that can double as furniture of a sort–something to sit on or set a TV on or use as a coffee table. It seems like a sturdy one would be versatile enough to justify the extra cost. At least I convicned my parents of that! But if I am mistaken, someone please let me know.

My daughter loved her trunk her freshman year of college. She kept it under her bed in her dorm room and had her valuables locked in it and other misc. stuff. She pulled it out frequently to use it as a table to eat on.

DSs have used the same trunk through scout camps and five summers at a college camp between them, and it’s a cheapie from Target or Academy or somewhere. Not sure I’d want to put something super-heavy on it constantly, but they report sitting on it at times. The ability to padlock is great, and it tucks right under the bed.

We used a trunk as a coffee table when I was in college. I still have them in the basement, where one holds a tv. My smaller one is fairly sturdy, the other two less so, but they are still hanging around 30 years later.

Just wanted to add that C&N, the company mentioned in MeKimber & Mezzo’sMama’s posts has great customer service. My daughter ordered one about five years ago (it still looks brand new after years of abuse by the way) and when she got her order it was the wrong color. She called and told them she was leaving for school in a few days so they overnighted the new trunk and told her she could return the other trunk later.

I bought one from here for S’s room at home – he uses is as a coffee table/hassock, and I use it as a place to toss all the clutter from the floor.

TrunksUSA.com is where I bought my son’s, and they are sturdy but reasonably priced considering the better value than Walmart’s trunks. Not CHEAP, but much more sturdy trunk that will last a full 4-5 years even the abuse college kids would likely dish out.

I had no idea anyone used these any more… seems like they would be over the limit of what an airline would let you check without extra fees. Wheelie duffles took my kids to college and back, and fit under their beds easily (but agree they won’t double as a table!).

@UofAMom64‌ - As a new member, you might want to notice the dates on posts. The people you were responding to are 5 years removed from the question. Easy mistake to make, and we often close old threads that have no current value. But this is a timeless topic, lol. As proved by the memory you stirred in me of my old footlocker with travel stickers all over it (Ah, those sweet sweet Greyhound rides from home to school and from school to other schools to visit friends). So not closing this one.

My footlocker went to camp and college with me and has travel stickers all over the top. I just told DS he can have it and paint it after taking a picture of the top. It’s the heavy wooden type, and it may have been my dad’s. We bought the cheap Target kind for the kids to take to camp, and one is still going strong. In fact, it’s packed and ready to go to camp tomorrow! I have seen some at an Army Navy for around $50 and they appeared to be a step up from the Target ones.
