Emptying the basement of old boxes, we had several printer/audio/computer boxes with big pieces of styrofoam shaped to hold equipment. Is there anything I can do other than throw it away? Our area does not offer recycling.
Nope. It’s useless.
I use several to raise storage off the basement floor. Or larger chunks at the bottom of large planters to reduce the weight of full dirt.
It is quite useful if you have very tall planters. I fill mine with crushed styrofoam 2/3 way so I don’t have to use a whole lot of soil. The plants don’t need 3-4 feet of dirt.
If you use the foam to fill space in planters, you may want to put it in bags first so that it does not get mixed with the soil, so that if you later want to remove some of the soil and use it elsewhere, it will not have bits of plastic mixed into it that will be hard to separate out.
Love the planter idea!
