Sub-par AP scores...drastically hurt admissions?

Hypothetical…
Student at good private school. In top 10-25% of class. Good GPA. About 3.8 unweighted, 4.1 weighted. Awaiting SAT scores, but expected to be good/average. BUT AP scores are:
US History 4
Biology 3
English Lit/Comp 3

Will this hurt the student’s admissions at top schools (not necessarily Ivys though)? How much are AP scores weighted in the long run? Thoughts? Opinions?

You didn’t fail any o-o. AP tests can only help you, not hurt

AP courses are very important; AP scores do not hold much weight, as you can choose to send them. If you get A’s in your AP class but get a 1 on the test, it doesn’t matter in admission–you won’t get the credit the school may offer for a 4 or 5, but it won’t hurt your admissions. However, if you got, like, a C in your AP class but a 5 on the test, that shows a lack of motivation and suggests you wouldn’t do well in a college class, you’re just good at tests.

Also remember that if you really don’t like how you performed on the tests, you can choose to simply not report them.

But do selective schools question your capabilities if they are really expecting 4s and 5s?
