Subject Test Scores

Hi, I got 800 in physics, chemistry, and Math 2 back in May. The problem is my mom signed me up for June because she thought I’d do poorly on Physics and Chemistry (I thought too), so I self-studied for Biology and took that along with Math 1 in June

My question is, is there any benefit of me sending all 5 scores, assuming I do well in Biology, seeing as I didn’t take Biology in senior high and our school doesn’t offer APs or anything like that till we have IB in senior high? In this regard, what is a good score given that I self-studied for Biology from scratch? Thanks!

No. And Math 1 was just a waste of time an money as it is just a subsection of M2

Colleges will not care that you self studied.

You can certainly send all scores, but here’s the reality from my experience: They will consider the highest 2. If your target schools are like my college, little elves in the basement (well, work/study students) assemble a cover sheet which lists only the top 2 Subject Test scores; the other scores will appear further inside the package if the AO decides to dig for them.

So no AO will go “Ooooh, 5 Subjects Tests.” It is far more likely that s/he will think “Doesn’t this kid have anything better to do on a Saturday?”

But at this point, what’s done is done.

I do think there is value to a good score on Biology. I think it says something that you didn’t have it in HS but were able to self study and get a good score.

While I don’t think taking June tests was necessary given your other high scores; I do think Biology could add value if 700+ (and you could point out in “other information” that you self-studied).

Also may depend on whether you are going for a Humanities or STEM type degree.

The digital download elves in my basement will show them all. They’ll appear in the body of the common app, if OP self reports them. And adcoms will see that.
At this point, June 1 was yesterday. So he can’t know the latest results.

No win for doing well via self study. If you’re applying for STEM, no loss in reporting a good bio score. You have time to decide which scores get sent.

@skieurope is right that at least for Harvard, they record the two highest subject scores and combine it with the best SAT or ACT score to come up with a numerical score. Before they dropped the subject test requirement, a 3 would have been the best score you could get with a 1 for each perfect score summing to 3. Don’t know what they do now but I assume it’s pretty similar. So taking 5 subject tests is not > 3 or 2. Might psychologically have an impact if they actually see it but who knows and it’s not worth the effort, imo. Also, absolutely do not take the Math 1 exam. You might look like you’re test-obsessed if you do. There’s a point where the returns are not just diminishing but actually negative… Good luck with everything!

It may make the OP feel good, but the AO won’t notice/care.

I think you are overestimating how deep a dive an AO will get into an application in the 10 minutes s/he reads it. The OP already has 3 800’s. The AO will spend a nanosecond to note that and then move on.

At the end of the day, the OP can certainly list them, but it’s just not going to move the needle the way s/he thinks it will, IMO.

Depends on the school. It can’t hurt to include other excellent scores.
I agree with you on Math1 though, as it’s lower than Math2. 800 on Math2 made the Math1 totally unnecessary.

Why does Cornell then, insist on seeing ALL SAT scores, from regular SAT and Subject Tests rather than score choice the highest Subject Tests like other schools allow?

Also, not everyone is applying to Harvard. OP did not state where he/she is applying.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. I think I’m going to cancel my scores for the reasons cited above (especially on looking obsessive about test-taking, which I promise you I’m not!). I don’t think I’m going to do too well on Bio either, anticipating around a 750, maybe a bit less. Do you guys agree with this move?

I don’t think you need to cancel. Well maybe the Math1 (but keep if you think 800; if any chance of les than 800, I’d cancel it b/c the 800 Math2 is so much more impt).

I’d keep the Bio if you think you got 750. That’s a great score. And could help you look like less of a perfectionist. It shows your versatility in the Sciences.

I’m just a parent, but I’d cancel because you have 3 perfect scores and they aren’t looking for any more. Why keep open the possibility of having something less? Since all of your other tests were in STEM, if you had taken a test in the humanities in June and if you thought you nailed them, then maybe. But Id still have doubts about opening yourself up to a potential not great score (if you’re applying to any schools that require you to submit all test scores), and the thought that you’re obsessed with test taking.
