I am more familiar with the ACT and understand that subscores are combined and those submitted to a college must all be taken during the same test session/date. BUT, on the SAT, I see there is an option for scheduling SUBJECT TESTs - and I presume that is taking the Critical Reading or Math separately, correct?? If this is allowed, will colleges take the best of these individual scores? How does this work? What is the purpose of the subject tests?

Subject tests are not Critical Reading and Math. The purpose is (I think) to show colleges other skills that you have besides fixing sentences, being able to read passages, and solving for ‘x’.
For example, you can take US History, French, Biology, etc. But you can also take a Mathematics subject tests too, and there’s an English one (I think it’s English Lit but I’m not sure)
