<p>I play a traditional Chinese instrument that is quite uncommon and want to submit a recording with my application. However, a lot of colleges that I’m applying to ask that arts supplements be submitted only if one has received high level awards or has “extraordinary talent,” which I cannot say that I have. Do you think I could I still submit it because it is unusual and has cultural significance? Some colleges say that they will have it reviewed by the music faculty and I wonder if my performance would hold up to that level of scrutiny, as compared to those of highly-recognized musicians who play Western instruments. Because I think it would add significantly to my application, could I perhaps submit a recording some other way, not through the official arts supplement?</p>
<p>Traditional Chinese instruments aren’t that unusual. They’re a stock part of many Ivy music departments. If you’re lucky, you may find a video of an Ivy music group playing your instrument on Youtube.</p>
