Substitute for ice cream; the healer of a damaged self-esteem?

After having lived in the same country my whole life, i moved to an International School in Asia for my last three years of high school. I struggled with the american system, dropped in a completely different culture and environment, and fought against the language barrier. “Poptarts? Archie’s? Gatorade? GPA? IB? Never heard of that before!” I studied hard and managed to master the language while still maintaining a continuous ‘Highest Honor Roll’, something I amazed myself with. After receiving a 2100 SAT score and a 112 toefl without even glancing over any SAT prep book or TOEFL help guide, I felt proud; proud of the succesfull transition I seemed to have undergone in the last three years.

Now college acceptances/rejections came, and I was rejected to all the colleges I applied to in the US. Although I probably aimed too high, (read: Amherst, Williams, Brown, Columbia and Georgetown), i can’t help but feel like a slight failure as I received rejection after rejection within one week.

Hence the titel of this thread. I realise this is by far not the end of the world and life goes on. Success or failure is not measured by getting into the top universities in the US but rather by strength of character, experience and knowledge etc. Still you can’t prevent feeling hurt and defeated for a frozen moment. Therefore, for everyone with similar experiences to post: How do/did YOU get over the rejections?

Personally, I find myself watching Friends episodes with buckets of Straciatella ice cream in my arms (yum!) but I’m curious to hear of other people’s remedies!
