Success with business degree

Well, I’m trying to decide between majoring in business and engineering at Cal Poly. My dad is urging me to major in engineering, because ‘you need to know about the product in order to be able to manage the company properly.’ There has to be some validity to this statement, and I was wondering if one could switch from the telecom industry to let’s say…the music industry without knowing much about the industries. Since people major in computer science and music related things, I have doubts about running a business without having major in that specific field. Business appeals to me because I am not sure what I want to do with my life (although I do have high aspirations), and business seems to have more opportunities.
Thanks for your input.

I know EXACTLY what you should do: toss a coin!

go with the coin.

Well, there are plenty of biotech companies that have great product potential, but are doing terrible at marketing and earning income, because they have MD’s and PHD’s running the company, and they don’t seem to know what they are doing.

Sure, an engineering degree would be useful if you want to eventually go into business and be a manager for a technical firm. However, if you do major in business, then there are still many other opportunities, especially in things like marketing, finance, and investment banking. I believe the thing that matters most is having the MBA, whether you majored in engineering or business. There are many fields that people do well in with only economics or business degrees, such as investment banking and finance.

Well that is what I wanted to hear (from raneksin). I will eventually get an MBA, and if I don’t like engineering, I can change fields after getting an MBA.
Thanks.
