I am doing a project for school and before I set my topic in stone I was wondering what you guys think of the anti-drug commercials aimed at teens and young adults? I know this is such a random question, but since this is the Princeton board, I figured people posting here have good opinions!

Also, if you think the ads out right now are ineffective at attaining their goals, what might be a better approach for an ad campaign?

LOVE your sn!

they’re okay…i like the overall message and the style is a good in blend of what would appeal to parents and what would appeal to kids. however, words can only do so much

athlonmj- it’s “I do not know why” (yes, hao, i know a lot more french then i let on in english. i just suck at remembering verbs that i dont use on a regular basis.)

also used in english to the point where it is in dictionaries as a noun. her je ne sais quoi= her certain something

from www.everything2.com:
French expression literally meaning “I know not what”; je I , ne…pas not , sais know , quoi what . In Oxford English Dictonary since 1656. It is a way to express a quality that is hard to describe; a certain something.

Example: “dem bones is really stylish, he has a certain je ne sais quoi.”

and jay, “I do not know why” is a far cry from knowing french. i don’t take french and i know it. it’s like saying “no se” in spanish. basic, basic, level one language.

Curiously, in French one rarely hears people use it… Kinda like RSVP (repondez s’il vous plait) which is similarly not used in French.
Sorry about that. I couldn’t contribute to the subject of the effectiveness of the drug ads, so I did to the other topic.

I hate the one where it shows a stoned teenager shooting his buddy
Pot should not be illegal…
where it has been legalized (portugal,England) usage rates have gone down
40% of American adults admit smoking weed

A friend of mine wrote her IB extended essay on the anti-drug marketing campaign and its effectiveness. I wish I had more to offer than that, but at least now you know that there’s plenty of research out there on the subject since she managed to write 4000 words on the topic.

The one with a teenager shooting his friend, and the one on launch.com with there’s two girls in a bathroom, and one is holding a pregnancy test, and the other one starts reading the results and then they say “Still in control?” - those are the two most effective in my mind. They aren’t directly affecting my personal choices, but they did make me stop and think.

Just because 40% of adults admit having done it doesn’t mean 40% are currently doing it.

i usually laugh at those ads. They’re so over the top and exaggerated.

yeah, if alcohol is legal, pot should definitely be legal for like 21 and over. It’s basically the same effect and both can be damaging to you. Actually, alcohol is more dangerous than pot. You can die from alcohol poisoning. It’d be VERY hard to die from smoking pot.

It’s sooooooo not legal to smoke pot in England! You’ll be fined, but probably unlikely to go to jail. (unlikely to get caught in the first place though.)

As far as I’m aware the only country in Europe where it is legal is Holland.

It’s hard to die from alcohol poisoning, cause you’ll throw up long before the alcohol concentration climbs that much…
I don’t know if pot is by itself more or less damaging than alcohol, but I do know that it can lead you to heavier forms of drugs, making it more dangerous.

To answer to the initial question, I haven’t seen the said commercials, but the most powerful anti-drug message I have seen is “Requiem for a Dream”, a movie… A great movie I must add, I’m still shocked by it…

you would need to smoke 900 joints in one sitting to get a lethal dose of THC.

Like alcohol however, pot can impair other body functions and so it is not a good idea to drive stoned. After all, Laura Bush killed her best friend when she ran a stop sign when she was stoned.

And yes… pot should be legalized( and taxed for education revenue) it is no worse than alcohol and is certainly less harmful than tobacco
