Ellen Degeneres has been on a sugar cleanse diet for about 10 days now - she’s been mentioning it on her show each day. Sounds like she will eat natural sugars - like in fruit - but no processed sugar.

What do you know about this? I did a quick search and didn’t see anything pop out that looked very informative. Have you ever tried it? How did it make you feel? Do they recommend a certain amount of days for effect to take place?

I have been thinking about doing this for some time now. I’ve heard it’s good for inflammation and yeast infections but that’s hearsay. I would like to do it just to kill my sweet tooth. Probably for it to be effective, you should also cut out any refined flour products as well. No bread, even ‘whole wheat’, just grains.

I think the ‘new’ way of healthy eating is all about eating foods with a ‘low glycemic’ index. Citrus fruits have a much higher glycemic index than fruit grown in more moderate climates (bananas, also). So it’s not as obvious as you would think.

I also read about new studies showing the link between drinking two sodas a day or more and pancreatic cancer. I think as this new movement progresses, we might see more food labels that list the glycemic index.

It is difficult to do - I gave up sugar for Lent one year and discovered that sugar is in a lot of foods that you would think were sugar-free - I became a good label reader and learned a lot of different ‘names’ for sugar. I became a regular in the Organic section at Wegmans…I did not lose much weight, but boy did I feel so much better, tons more energy. The first few days or so are pretty difficult, particularly if you have that sweet tooth, but after that you don’t miss it to be quite honest. And the first time I introduced foods with sugar back into my diet (in moderation) the taste was so overpowering, much too sweet. I have not put sugar in my coffee or tea since…

I was curious what the benefits were - less bloating, weight loss, more energy - that kind of stuff. I’m not looking to lose lots of weight but would just like to lose a couple of pounds and of course, just feel better overall.

Of course, a sunny 80 degree day would probably accomplish that! :)

I just think this sort of stuff is silly. That said I don’t eat huge amounts of sugar except for a weakness for cookies (which I’m not buying or making until I lose 30 pounds). I put a little brown sugar on oatmeal. I made an apple pie this weekend which has a whole cup of sugar in it. I have waffles on Saturdays - so there’s a little sugar in the batter and of course a fair amount of maple syrup (the real stuff).
