Mariah Carey’s Christmas album to be very good and is good for parties.

Ah, where to start…

There’s a CD called “Carnegie Hall Christmas” that has Kathleen Battle, Frederika von Stade, the Wynton Marsalis septet, and the Harlem Boy’s Choir. It’s all good but my favorites are Silent Night (Battle and Marsalis- and it can melt ice!), Mary’s Little Boy Chile (everyone), Joy to the World (Marsalis) and Lo, How a Rose e’er Blooming (von Stade and the Choir).

For some good oldies - I second “Baby it’s cold outside”, but I like the version by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Jordan better (but Dean’s is good too!)

Don’t leave out “Sugar Rum Cherry” by Duke Ellington, “White Christmas” by the Drifters, “A Marshmallow World” by Bing Crosby, “Merry Christmas Baby” by Ike and Tina Turner, “Santa Bring my Baby Back to Me” and “Blue Christmas” by Elvis, “Silent Night” by Huey Piano Smith, and “Sleigh Ride” by the Ventures.

Many of the ones above are on the “Best of Cool Yule” one of the first CD’s by Rhino Records.

There are also funny songs on the CDs “A Colbert Christmas” and on “A John Waters Christmas”. “Santa Claus is a Black Man”, “Fat Daddy”, “A Cold, Cold Christmas”, “Nutmeg”, “Can I interest you in Hannukah”, to name just a few.

“Mamacita, Donde esta Santa Claus” by El Vez is hilarious also. And on a solemn note, don’t miss “O Holy Night” by Tracy Chapman.

Enjoy!
