Suggest some west coast schools for me!

Basically…I go to a prestigious private school in Hawaii. I’m ranked 144/445. 3.4 GPA, 1820 cummulative GPA. 2 year varsity wrestler , 2 year JV. Annual improvement upon GPA. Journalism internship during summer of Junior year w/ the University of Hawaii newspaper. Intend to major in journalism w/ the ultimate goal of becoming a sports writer/columnist. Write on state championship newspaper staff. Awarded best Sports Article in State at annual state high school Newspaper Banquet.

Hooks: None, really. I’m Hawaiian and would be a first-generation college student. HELP!

University of Oregon for Journalism…definitely…

UC Irvine has a “literary journalism” major. Supposedly the writing program there is strong.

http://www.humanities.uci.edu/litjourn/program/program.html</a></p>

UCs are really competitive OOS.

That said, try Arizona. They’re ranked as one of the best college newspapers.

You should also check out the University of Washington. Check out the Journalism Program at http://www.com.washington.edu/Program/Undergrad/admissions.html</a>. It’s listed towards the bottom after Communications.

Also, in Seattle, there are internship opportunities with the Seattle Times (<a href=“Home | The Seattle Times”>Home | The Seattle Times) and Seattle Post-Intelligencer (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/pijobs/). Plus Seattle’s sports scene is buzzing these days with the Sonics drafting Kevin Durant and trading for Jeff Green, the Mariners making a push to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2001, and the Seahawks just two years removed from going to the Super Bowl. Plenty of great opportunities in Seattle.

On a side note, check out the Mercedes-Benz Drive Your Future Scholarship ($10,000) for first-generation college students. <a href=“About Us | Mercedes-Benz USA”>About Us | Mercedes-Benz USA;

If you have any specific questions, feel free to send me a PM. I’d be glad to help.

Really like Seattle, so far. Thanks! Any others.

What about Seattle University?

Proud Husky…don’t compare Jedd Green and Durant to losing Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis…

UW and UC’s are very competitive OOS. They arent really realistic unless you are talking about UCSC/UCR/UCM. UCI and UW are not likely. I would look at University of San Diego, University of San Francisco, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Santa Clara, etc. These are all private. If you are looking for public, I would consider lower UC’s UCSC, UCR, UCM, and Cal State Schools. Also consider U or Oregon, Oregon State, Washington State.

I read the OP’s post, and Arizona State University definitely popped into my head. I heard a lot of great things about the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. http://cronkite.asu.edu/</a></p>

Pepperdine!

Seriously. Best campus in the nation, great dorm rooms, solid journalism program.

i agree about UW and Arizona State.

lewis and clark? University of Portland?

Sheed30, I wasn’t actually comparing the addition of Jeff Green and Kevin Durant to losing Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis. How the Sonics fare this year (they still won’t be that good for another few years) doesn’t really have much to do with sports journalism. By the way, I’m a 503 kid who could care less about the Sonics when I’ve followed the Blazers since I was a kid.

wooooooooooooooooot…lol P-town for life…I’m also part of the 503…

Rasheed wears 36 now with the Pistons, so I figured. Not to mention “P-Town, where the ballas Ball.” haha.

lol, yea i know…but i have the Blazers Jersey with 30 so i can’t stop with that number

503 - West side!
