Suggestions and Advice?

I’m a freshman and I’m really interested in the combined degree programs. My question is what I should do or start to do to get a good start in getting into such a program.

I would say I go to a pretty good high school, it’s a medical high school and it won the Intel Best of the Best thing in 2005, but the problem is that they DON’T offer any AP classes. Would that affect my college admissions at all? I asked my guidance counselor this and she said it wouldn’t, and the reason there were no APs was because we were a small school (~70 kids in each grade). Is this true?

I get all A’s, but it’s too early to say a specific GPA. I think my overall average is a 94.

Not in all that many clubs (I kinda joined a bunch at the beginning but then started missing the meetings), but going to start anew next year.

Probably going to start volunteering soon also, we need 100 hours by junior year to get into NHS. I noticed that a lot of people on CC who got into combined programs did things like research/internships during the summer. I live in Jersey, so are there any summer programs like that around here?

Hey, don’t worry about anything…just keep doing what you’re doing. Also, you don’t need to do research etc., those are just overachievers. And no, your high school not offering any APs will not hurt you at all…and I know I sound like a ■■■■■■■■■ when I say: GO HAVE SOME FUN, YOU’RE A FRESHMAN!

you can just self study some aps like AP Bio , Psychology, Econ, etc. and take the test if your interested. Just call you local ap coordinator.

although i agree with insecure101 in that you should EnJoY!! life as a freshman… i have to disagree abt the research thing
research became the key reason why i was admitted to one of those programs… and i believe it provides a HUGE advantage… esp if u win science fairs… or even get semifinalist in the Siemens Westinghouse or Intel competitions… Gluck!!

Ok then . . . since it’s June and all, and I posted this thread at the end of May, and I’ll be a soph in a matter of months. Say I enjoyed that last tidbits of frosh year, what should I start doing for sophomore year?
As for the research experience, when should I start looking for these programs? How old/what grade should I be in for them?
