Suggestions are appreciated

Background:

I am both Dyslexic & ADHD I’m attending a public school in Houston Texas where are grading system is 70% major 20%minor 10%daily. The GPA is A(4.0) B(3.0) etc. I took all accelerated and honors classes (other than English) that are weighted on a 5.0 scale up until my current senior year.

Situation:

Education was never a priority or even encouraged my mother was a first year college dropout and religion nut, and my father attended a minimal electrician trade school in Canada. He worked his way up a large oil company than started his own designing and manufacturing top drives for oil rigs and does very well financially. I never found school difficult (other than writing do to my Dyslexia.) I was able to put little to no effort in and still out preform my peers when it came to testing (both coarse and standardized.) 9-11 grade I would participate very little in my classes and preform very well on my tests to compensate averaging a B maintaining the 4.0 (weighed). My GPA for 9-11 is roughly a 3.1 (I promise i’m not dumb my last official IQ test in 7th grade was 151) . I was kicked out in December Junior year and I had to juggle everything that had to do with being independent. Ultimately It forced me to grow the up.

Senior year

I took my ACT for the first time over the summer and didn’t do any sort of preparation but I got a 30 composite with a 32 on the science portion. I only did poorly on the math section because I didn’t expect such simple math it had been so long sense id done anything of the sort and didn’t recall simple equations and concepts. I plan on taking it twice this year without the essay, i’m confident ill get at least a 32.

This year i’m in 5 AP classes
-Biology
-Psychology
-Government
-Economics
-Computer Science
& dual credit Algebra witch is a AP equivalent
I took the ap tests for Physics A and Human geography without taking the coarse and received a 4 on both

as of the first grading period I have a 3.83

I am also in Scientific Research & Design(robotics) this is my first year and I am lead design and lead engineer after the first two competitions we are pre qualified for state

I am planning on going to college in Canada and majoring in Biology/Biochemistry but not exactly sure of all the schools i’m going to apply to yet open to suggestions. Mcgill would be my top choice but my GPA doesn’t meet the minimum requirements
another school i was looking into was

Any suggestions you can give me are much appreciated my school’s college counselor isn’t much help

I don’t think school counselor’s in the US will be particularly familiar with Canadian colleges. You will have to start researching them yourself. I am a bit confused if you are kicked out of school and why? I don’t understand what major and minor grading means, I have never heard of that. Your ACT is fine. Why don’t you plan on just taking it again once when you are prepared? There is no need to take it over and over. If you wanted, you could try the SAT.

This wikipedia article has a sortable chart of uni’s in CAN
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_universities_in_Canada

ps it is ‘course’ ‘perform’

U of Alberta is fine in STEM and less difficult to gain admission to.

Oh god, my apologizes allow me to clarify. I wasn’t kicked out of school I have never received any disciplinary conduct of the sort :)) I was kicked out my home. I’m sorry I wrote this at 3:00 AM this morning and to say I’ve been sleep deprived this week would be an understatement. Iv taken the SAT twice (in junior high actually) and it’s not my cup of tea. In regards to my ACT thats what I am doing I just had to brush up on my basic algebra and geometry for my MATH portion. Iv taken 3 practice ACT test’s and I’m consistently scoring 30+ on math and 28-29 on reading while maintaining my original 32 on science the only section I continue to struggle on is English, but that has always been a week subject for me.

@BrownParent

ok, why are you kicked out and where are you living? Did you go to the court about it as they have to support a minor, do you have a guardian or are in foster care? How are you going to pay for college, what is the budget?

The good thing about Canadian universities is that they don’t look at your 9-12 GPA. They look at your grade 11 GPA for the early admission round (in December) and then your grade 12 GPA for the next rounds. A 3.8 will be fine.

What is your objective in studying Biology or Biochemistry? If it’s med school, you won’t necessarily want to go to one of the top ranked universities as they can be GPA killers.

Do you have your Canadian citizenship card? If so, you will get Canadian tuition. However, since you don’t live in Canada, you won’t be eligible for financial assistance. Need based financial assistance comes from the government, not the university. Your cost of attendance will be $20-$25K CAD.

@bouders Yes I have dual citizenship I was born in Edmonton. Considering my field of study I’m not interested in med school I’m much prefer the research aspect. I’m not exactly certain of my objective at this point. Up until recently I was set on genetic engineering. I’m still strongly considering it but I’ve began looking at other fields of interest as well.

@bouders Not sure about other Canadian schools but McGill looks at all grade 10, 11 and 12 grades for students coming out of an American high school, regardless of citizenship.

So Bouders, what would the OP need to do to get financial assistance/grants from the government? Is there a waiting period? How about a gap year strategy?
