Daughter is moving from from Madison to NYC - has a bedroom full of stuff but that’s it - one quote was for almost $2000 which seems high - any suggestions?
She may just want to sell the stuff she has and use the money to buy new furniture once she moves to N YC.
Can she just ship her personal be.ongings like clothes…and sell the bedroom furniture?
We used Greyhound bus to get my son’s stuff back from Texas when he had to withdraw. The price was really reasonable.
@MaineLonghorn does greyhound do furniture? I didn’t think they did.
Oh, that’s a good point. I was just thinking of “stuff.” We used huge boxes for things like bean bag chairs.
To the OP…if all it is is “stuff” would it be less costly to just fill up a car…and drive?
We moved two kids a distance. In both cases, it was less costly to buy things at the new home than to schlep it or have it moved any distance.
I would check with Greyhound. I bought a piece of furniture on ebay and it was shipped to me via greyhound (or one of those bus companies). I had to go to a bus terminal to pick up my piece because they didn’t do door to door service.
I would also check out uship. I used them to deliver a piece of furniture for me and it was very reasonable.
Would she consider renting a van for a one way trip, getting a friend to help, and driving? Also think about if the furniture is worth moving.
I think it really depends on the nature of her things, and what kind of place she will be moving into,
If she has special–heirloom or otherwise–furniture, sure, move it. If not, I agree with selling it and putting the money toward new apartment-quality furniture. (IKEA, for example.) She can find Goodwill and Craigslist finds in NYC also. But her grandmother’s desk my be priceless.
A lot will depend on whether she is moving into a walk-up.
If she does has furniture that she wants to keep for the long haul, I think renting a U-Haul–which can be a trailer or a van, depending–and getting some friends/family to help her schlep it would probably be more economical.
Things like china and books and kitchenware can be packed and shipped.
If she is moving to NYC the first thing she sells should probably be her car, if she has one.
BTW, if she has heirloom furniture that she can’t take with her, she should try to find a home for it in the family, either temporarily or permanently. (My family is the kind that hangs on to our stuff.
)
She can undoubtedly find a few strong guys in the gig economy to load/unload her stuff on both ends.
I am not entirely sure what the op was asking or saying. What was the quote for? Moving the bedroom furniture. or the rent of the apartment.
If the question was moving the bedroom furniture, the answer is simple. If replacing the furniture in NYC is cheaper, do not move it. If your current furniture it more valuable and you do not want to give it up, pay the moving costs. If you are unsure of the above, store it until you are.
If you are asking about the rent. Well that also has considerations. Is the $2000 for a studio in Manhatten? Or is it just for a room sharing somewhere or a studio.
IOW, where are you renting and what are the requirements.
Last summer we moved with three U-Haul U-Boxes (their version of moving “pods”). There was no loading assistance at our old residence in the Far North Midwest so various friends helped us pack the boxes. Here in the DC suburbs U-Haul had a list of local contractors who could bring the U-Boxes to our place and unloaded them for us.
You can check the rates here for the boxes: https://www.uhaul.com/UBox/
And here for helpers at pick-up and/or arrival locations: https://www.uhaul.com/MovingHelp/
Madison WI? Movers doing the packing? That price is inline. I’m sure NYC has complications that drive the price up.
Thanks to all for your replies!
