Heading to Chicago this weekend! I was hoping someone could give me a suggestions for a very special lunch in the Michigan Ave/Magnificent Mile area. We are traveling with someone that is really into fine food. Perhaps the food is outstanding…perhaps the view is to die for…anyone have an all time favorite?

Chef Evan is incredible!

For the best food I’ve had in Chicago, I’d go to Fogo to Chao. It’s on Clark, just a block off Michigan Ave. The food is divine. Very pricy in the evenings, but lunch is the same menu at half the price. It’s Brazilian food, incredible grilled meats and a salad bar to die for. If you drink, try a caipirinha. For a view, I love the top of the John Hancock Building. I’ve been there for brunch on a weekend. Don’t know what the possibilities are during the week. There also used to be a wonderful Italian restaurant called Bice just off of lower Michigan Ave. For a tasting experience try the wine bar in the Intercontinental Hotel. They will pair wines and chocolate for you in tasting menus.

seeking: what type of food? There are so many really good choices, depending on the type of food.

Rick Bayless has 2 really great restaurants (great Mexican) [Restaurants: Restaurants - Rick Bayless | Frontera](Rick BaylessRestaurants - Rick Bayless)

FWIW, the top of the John Hancock is a great view, ( the window in the women’s room is the best!!!) But I am not sold on the food.

Also depends on your price range. There are some well respected/reviewed restaurants where the average tab is $200 per diner (for dinner).

Please let us know about your parameters.

These places all have great views and should be very good to excellent food. The first is at the Art Institute and overlooks Millennium Park, the second overlooks Oak Street Beach and Lake Michigan, and the third overlooks Michigan Avenue.

For an ultimate view and splurge, apparently Sixteen is the place to go - out of my price range!
What about the Ralph Lauren restaurant that is supposed to be Oprah’s favorite lunch spot?

My favorites–some already mentioned:

Mercat a la Plantxa–Jose Garces’ wonderful Catalan tapas
Frontera Grill
The Purple Pig–more casual but fantastic food
Terzo Piano at the Art Institute
Puck’s at the Museum of Contemporary Art
Vermilion

Thank you for all of the suggestions! I’ll take a look at them today.
Mafool, I suppose the type of food is flexible. The couple we are going with really like the best of the best. But overall, I guess I would describe their preference as American. They also adore a fantastic wine list. (I hope these places have a good salad on the menu…that might be all I can afford!) Again, thank you for taking the time to help me out. Looking forward to seeing Chicago again.

I would recommend Gibson’s steak house. Great location and excellent food and service, plus it is a good value for what you are getting. Londondad.

Second vote for NoMi. We’ve had a couple of memorable dinners there, one during a thunderstorm and we watched an incredible lightening show over Lake Michigan.

One of the Top Chef winners, Stephanie Izard, has a restaurant in Chicago. A foodie person might enjoy visiting her restaurant. It’s called The Girl and The Goat.

Rick Bayless is also a well-known chef that foodies might be interested in. I know Frontera has a good reputation.

We tried to get into The Girl and The Goat the last time we were in Chicago and coiuldn’t get a reservation. Ended up at Frontera that time. Here’s hoping the OP has better luck!

Which reminds me: Frontera serves a brunch menu for weekends at lunch time. I don’t know about the wine list.

Here’s a thought

Not “american,” but interesting food and I have never had a bad meal there.
