Suggestions for East Coast College Visits

We will be in NYC this summer for a short time (4-5 days) and since we’d already be out there, I’d like to take my daughter to see some schools. Last summer, we went on a campus tour of Columbia. What schools can we visit within a short drive from NYC? She’d like to see some of the ivies and we’ve seen GWU and Georgetown. As a rising junior, this is still a “general” visit to get a feel for location. Maybe there is an organized tour of schools that someone may know about?

Of the Ivies/more selectives, Yale, Princeton, Sarah Lawrence and Vassar are probably the closest.

Boston’s only about 3.5 hours if you want to see Harvard, MIT, BC, BU, Northeastern, etc etc

Lilmom, can you say that again in miles or hours?

Princeton, Vassar and Sarah Lawrence are what I would consider a short drive away, but New Haven and certainly Boston aren’t, usually. The traffic can make such drives a very long slog. But you can get to New Haven on MetroNorth, the commuter rail line, in less than 2 hours.

Take the train to Phila. and check out UPENN. Drexel is across the street. Swarthmore, Villanova, Haverford and Bryn Mawr close driving distance from Philly.

I second Princeton or Vassar.

If your daughter’s campus visits so far have been limited to Columbia, GWU, and Georgetown, she has only seen city campuses. It might be good for her to expand her horizons by visiting at least one school that is not in a major city.

Amherst College in MA is about three hours by car from NYC, and Brown is also within reach.

I suppose a short driving trip for me would be 3 hrs or less but now I’m not sure I want to drive. Friends say driving into Boston is a nightmare. I think I’ll look into train travel to Princeton and Vassar (and other schools in that general area.) Thanks!
