Suggestions for finding summer housing in Boston for internship

Hi,

Our son has gotten an inernship in Boston for the summer. Any suggestions for how he can find housing?

@LakeCarnegie I just googled summer internship housing for Boston and several options popped up including Boston University. It seems you don’t have to be a student of BU to take advantage of this. Maybe try that first???

Does his college have an alum Facebook group? I think my younger daughter got some leads on housing through the one for her school.

Is it actually in Boston, or is it in the Boston area? BU would be a great location if he just needs to take the T to downtown. But if the internship is in a suburb, he probably will want to be closer to where the job is. I would call the company and see if they have any suggestions. Back in the Stone Age, I had summer jobs where the company arranged for all summer employees to be in the same apartment complex

@LakeCarnegie

Your S should ask the company that offers the internship.

The last time my D had a summer internship with a company in New York City, she stayed in NYU dorm via a contract between the company and NYU.

Because Boston is overflowing with college students summer sublets abound. Craigslist is the place to look.

When my kid was in college in Boston, he and his roomies subletted their place every summer. They posted on theor FB pages first…but also used Craigslist.

LOTS of summer sublets in Boston. But good question about the location. If the internship is downtown…that is different than if it’s in the burbs.

My nephew’s friends did summer jobs in Boston and they sublet apartments in Cambridge which I think they found through Harvard (which they don’t attend).

MIT also has summer rentals (I think their frat housing).

Offer more details about where the internship is. My son lives in Somerville, and knows many people in the area.

My D had a summer internship in Boston, and rented a room from an MIT fraternity. It was conveniently located to public transportation options for her, plus had a great rooftop deck that was optimal for viewing the 4th of July fireworks!

My D did an internship in Boston last summer and rented an apartment through BU. Great location near Fenway Park.

When my D had a summer internship in Cambridge, she sublet a room in Somerville, on Davis Square that she found on Craigslist. There were a lot of options to sublet a single room in an apartment, but hard to show up with two friends and try to rent three rooms in the same house or apt together. I had told my daughter to look for someplace that had an air conditioner in the bedroom and she was glad that she had done so!

Yes…look for AC in the summers. Boston is HOT.

Everyone is spot on here. You want A/C in the city (and suburbs) during the summer. (New Englanders will tell you they only need it for one week…they are full of BS!) Check university dorms (BU, Emerson, Suffolk, Northeastern, etc.) and check Craigslist for summer sublets. If he is working in town, have him go by the T and don’t bring a car. Between the T and Uber he’ll be just fine.

The Student Village at BU has AC. I’m not sure any of the other dorms do.

I will say…my kid didn’t have AC, and he had multiple sublet offers every summer…because his location was perfect.

Lol @SwimmingDad I was about to say you only really need AC for a week or less per summer. Yes we’re in Somerville!

Craigslist. (Have never had AC)

If you go on early enough, airbnb can work too. There is currently a room in Cambridge that would be perfect. PM me. But if he wants to live in a group housing situation craigslist works fine.

Admittedly I’m a heat wimp…a total heat wimp in fact. But I also have memories of having people crash at my apartments (St. Germain by Symphony Hall; South End) 20+ years ago during summer heat waves…because I always had some level of AC.

MIT fraternities rent to non MIT students of all genders during the summer. Also you might want to try website Boston apartment sublet. DD stayed last summer in MIT frat house without AC and I didn’t hear any complains.
