Suggestions for Poli-Sci program with an artsy music scene campus

Hi,
Looking for a school that has strong history, political science program in an artsy music environment. Something super progressive, liberal, etc. My D is a cello, player, singer in a folk band duo, top notch student. She’s started the Young Democrats club, a bird club, travels internationally for service, etc.
Thanks for any suggestions. S.

If she’s interested in liberal arts colleges, then Oberlin sounds like a good fit

Rice and Yale too.

Thank you for the suggestions. Rice is one we hadn’t though of. Oberlin is interesting too. Yale, while it would be a dream, is probably out of reach.

Try to do the music audition at the school if possible, Rice, Stanford, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, etc. all have on site music audition.

You have to be really good to get to participate at Oberlin, though.

Hi SusanFrith, my name is lil pump, and I’d love to help you with your college admissions process. See, Im a pumpkin, so I don’t have to apply to college, but I’d love to give you some tips on places with great polisci and an artsy background. Oberlin, Amherst, Swatty, kenyon, and a bunch of other small liberal arts schools have fantastic art and polisci programs, with an intimate liberal scene that you would love. Also, in the fall, these Northeast schools have beautiful fall foliage, perfect for PUMPKIN spice lattes. Happy halloween, and please don’t carve pumpkins. It’s abusive. We have feelings too.

Vassar and Wesleyan …check them out

What about the Claremont Schools. Pitzer or Scripps may be what she is looking for, although I can’t comment on music program.

@SusanFrith, Hamilton checks off those boxes!

Our DD’s seem very similar to yours; they both decided to Hamilton after looking at and being accepted to many similar schools. One is a poli/sci gov major and will be taking part in the Hamilton DC program - we have a niece who works for a Senator on Capitol Hill and she says it is very well known. https://www.hamilton.edu/academics/offcampusstudy/washington-program

Good luck on the search as there are lots of great schools to chose from.

My daughter is similarly interested, but is a dancer. And we really could use some “merit aid”. Any thoughts on whether Hamilton would be a good fit? Thanks in advance.

@longvt : Hamilton could be a good fit for your daughter academically, but their (well-funded) financial assistance is entirely need based.

thank you!

@longvt LACs that offer merit aid and have dance programs of reasonable depth - Oberlin, St. Olaf, College of Wooster, Dickinson, and possibly Kenyon. If women’s colleges are an option - Mt Holyoke, Smith, and Bryn Mawr.

@SusanFrith I second Oberlin where my daughter is a very happy first year. Macalester might also be worth a look - I don’t know much about its music offerings per se, but the location in St. Paul would offer lots of possibilities and its poli sci/IR/history offerings are very good.

Maybe think outside the box a little–Loyola New Orleans?

Thanks for the tips! My daughter is resistant to he south but Loyola New Orleans looks like a great program.

Does Bryan Mawr offer significant merit aid? She did like Barnard (but it’s a reach academically and out of reach financially), so women’s colleges are a possibility. Thanks!
