Our printer just pooped out. It was an older HP 2510 and we’re desperate for a new one. Anybody LOVE their printer? What to buy and best place to buy it? Thanks in advance!

We just got a new Dell All-in-One and I like it. It’s wireless and works a LOT better than the Cannon we had before this one. The ink lasts a lot longer in this one too.

I like my Canon all in one. It plays better with Mac than most brands and the ink is much less expensive( & more stable) than Epson. I also have Canon cameras & the software works together.
I still miss my Apple LaserWriter though.
I bought the Canon through Amazon. The local electronic stores mostly carry HP & Brother, neither have a reputation to work well with Apple products ( which is all I have) They also are as big as a Mini, and I have a roll-top desk with a printer drawer, it has to fit in.

I think I am going to give mine to D & get this one that has double sided printing.

The best place to buy is where it’s on sale. I’ve bought printers at Staples. Once you decide what you want, you can search for it.

I don’t know your printing needs. Nearly all of our printing is b&w so we have a basic b&w laser printer. Cost under $100 and prints vastly more pages before needing ink. The total cost of running is less than for an inkjet, assuming you don’t refill your own cartridges.

You need to think about wireless. It’s really nice to be able to connect to a printer that you can hide away in a corner. We have a color printer stuck behind a door where it’s invisible. Only use it for the occasional scan - like of my kid’s drivers license - or the rare color print. Wireless means I can walk over with my MacBook, open Preview and control the scanner from there.

Other than that, I think all of the printers today are good. I’d check to see if there are any issues using a printer with your kind of computer. But all printers do well. The state of the art is ridiculously better than it was. Printers have become fungible.

If you have a need for an advanced function, that’s where things get interesting. For example, you can get printers that allow you to batch scan and fax, like a high end copier can do only not as well and not as reliably. That kind of high end feature is coming down market.

I agree that they have drastically improved in features and reduced in price. Biggest outlay will be ink, which is why you might want to consider a laser printer.

I echo the commenters who say go with the laser printing if you’re printing mostly b & w documents.

They tend to have much better build quality, toner cartridges are cheaper/page over the long haul, and toner doesn’t smudge/make as much of a mess as ink does.

Brother HL2270 wireless laser printer (B&W). Should be between $100-$150 depending on sales.

It (x2) works great so far.

We’ve had a Brother laser printer for years which (knock on wood) is still going strong. The toner has been a lot cheaper in the long run.

We also have a Brother laser B&W wireless printer at home. The kids have a color printer with scanner, not sure what brand it is but it was given to them by a relative who received it for free when buying her laptop. The one issue I have with my brother is it is not compatible with the IPAD.
We will need to buy D a printer to take to college. She of course will not be happy with just a B&W printer.

Check Amazon, Staples, Best Buy, etc., online. Somewhere there’s a printer that’s a recently discontinued model that’s on deep deep sale. Buy that one.

Our Dell All in One just died. We replaced it with an HP 8600 E-Print, it is an all in one and allows you to email print from smart phones and IPads. So far we love it.

Thanks everyone!

We purchased a Xerox Phaser 8560 (now discontinued) solid ink printer that produces VERY high quality images. It is fairly large but extremely reliable and comparable in quality to laser quality without emitting the fine particulate matter that can be irritating for breathing (we’re all asthmatics). Since it was purchased at Costco, when it died, we took it back for a full refund & purchased a new one (got 2 duds in a row). This, our 4th printer since 2007, has lasted since 2009 and is still going strong. It is very handy when I don’t want to go to the copy shop, when I need to print business cards, and also does a great job with duplex (double-sided printing), if you buy that as an extra feature.

They have some other replacement model, but we have been VERY happy with this printer. We often buy the genuine replacement ink on ebay. Since it’s not toner, ink takes up very little space (about the size of ink jet cartridges). LOVE this printer & will have to really hunt to find one I like as well when this finally breaks for good.

It was NOT cheap (about $600, plus upgrades), but we feel for the amount of printing we have done with it over its lifetime, it has been well worth it for us.

I’ve always preferred wireless laserjet…but I’ve switched to inkjet because I am not comfortable with the health issues associated with laserjet emissions. Something you might want to read about and take into account in your decision making.

This is one of the reasons we purchased the solid ink printer–it seems much safer to use melted wax than having fine particulate matter from lazer printers in the air in our home (where our printer resides).

We ended up getting the Canon PIXMA MG 800 series at OfficeMax because it was 129.99 this weekend and my husband likes his Canon that he uses for business. They were offering 20% off of everything you could fit in a bag so we loaded up on ink which I think we’re going to need. Thank you!!

This Canon PIXMA MG6220 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One Printer is at a “Gold Box” price at Amazon today of $59.99. Seems like an excellent deal. I just ordered one for myself.

HP Envy. Scans, copies, prints color and b/w. E printing feature. It prints from any of the four iphones in the house or the ipad or my dell laptop equally well. No issues with switching from printing from the dell to the ipad even if two people ask it to print at the same time.

I love my [Amazon.com: HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-On Wireless Color Printer with Scanner, Copier & Fax: Electronics](http://www.amazon.com/HP-Officejet-Wireless-Printer-Scanner/dp/B005O55TDO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1345387678&sr=8-2&keywords=hp+8600) which is available for a great price, $122.99. It has every bell and whistle, and seems to be as fast and economical as the laser I sent off with with one of my kids. (There are other iterations of the 8600 line for a bit more that have features such as a bigger LCD screen, or a second paper tray, but I don’t feel the lack.) The only downside is its big footprint. Make sure you have the room.

Today, I’m buying this [Epson® Expression® Home XP-400 All-in-One Printer | Staples®](http://www.staples.com/Epson-Expression-Home-XP-400-All-in-One-Printer/product_744783) for my daughter to take to college. On sale for $69.99. Unlike the HP 8600, it takes up little real estate (being part of their cleverly named, “small-in-one” line)–good for a cramped dorm room. It has the features a student might need, although it’s missing features such as a fax and Ethernet capability. I’ve read that–most important for a printer–its cost of operation is reasonable.

Because of the limited space in a dorm room, it is important to get a printer that takes up little real estate. We used to get a heavy laser printer for DS. It is so heavy that it is a headache everytime he needs to move it.

Recently we purchased a small low-end laser printer for DS (I think the brand is Brother.) Somehow, as of this moment, it does not work with his Macbook Pro (last year’s model.) He thinks it may be due to the driver. (Maybe he forgot to uninstall the driver before he installs the new driver??)

Can not wait until Mountain Lion is out. Since Snow leopard is better than leopard, I would imagine Mountain Lion may be better than Lion.

OOps… it looks like it has been out:
