Suggestions for Silicon Valley apartments?

We are heading out to CA next week to help S1 and spouse look for apartments. Anyone have recommendations on good complexes to consider? We are going out to drive them around to visit places (they want to be car-free for a while until they have solidified their lives a bit), but any on-the-ground intelligence would be most welcome.

Preferred areas are Sunnyvale, Palo Alto and Mountain View, with easy access to CalTrain and grocery shopping.

You might find rents a bit cheaper in Santa Clara as there was a glut of apartment and condo building there. Some areas in Santa Clara are close to the light rail and Cal Train. They won’t get very much for their money in Palo Alto or Mountain View.

A good place to look for apartments is Craig’s List.

They are planning to rent for six months and then decide if they want to live in SV or in SF and take the employee shuttle. Are perfectly happy to have a basic, no frills 1BR.
