Suggestions for Spring Break - Engineering in SE states

We will be traveling to the beach (gulf coast - Alabama) this spring break and are looking for schools to visit along the way. On our list currently are Vanderbilt and University of Alabama - Tuscaloosa. Would love to see Georgia Tech as well, but they will be on spring break at the same time (do they do tours during spring break? And would it be worth it?).

DS is a Junior and interested in Engineering - Electrical and/or Mechanical. His main interest lies in automotive design. He currently has 3.9 UW/4.0 W GPA. 34 ACT. Will not qualify as NMSF.

Any suggestions for schools to visit - Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana - with strong engineering? Merit aid and/or financial aid required!

Thanks in advance for your help!

bump…please? :)

As for GT doing tours during spring break…you’ll likely have to either contact them and ask or go on their website and see if they have online booking…then see if your desired date is available.

It can be hard to get a feel for a school during its Spring Break.

As for visiting Bama…

Make your online campus tour reservation…try for an early morning time! Don’t bother with the “info session”, you’ll get that info here pretty much on the Alabama forum on College Confidential which is VERY active.* [University of Alabama - College Confidential](University of Alabama - College Confidential Forums)

In the email include:

Student’s name and contact info

Date and time of the Campus tour that you’ve reserved.

GPA and test scores

Likely majors*

Career interests (including med, law, etc)

Anything particular that you want to see. *If you have an interest in seeing the new Science and Engineering Complex, let them know.

For his stats, some of the automatic scholarships are:

Alabama Birmingham – $15,000 (approx full OOS tuition)
Alabama Tuscaloosa – full tuition + $2,500
(Alabama Huntsville full ride is no longer available)
Florida A&M – full tuition (OOS), full ride (IS)
Howard – full ride (but 3.5 college GPA to keep)
(Louisiana State full tuition is no longer available)
Louisiana Tech – full ride
Mississippi – $15,000 (OOS, approx 90% tuition), $5,000 (IS, approx 80% tuition)
Prairie View A&M – full ride

There are competitive non-guaranteed large merit scholarships at places like NCSU (Park) and Georgia Tech (President’s). Berkeley has Drake for mechanical engineering majors only.

Mom2collegekids - thank you for the contact info at UA along with travel info. Definitely planning to stop by there - just need to decide at what point during the vacation.

UCBalumnus - thank you also for scholarship info. I was also thinking about LSU and/or Tulane during the trip. Will just have to look into them.

Thanks again!!
