I tried asking this in the Internships forum, but I don’t know how much traffic that board gets. (Not much on this question, anyway. :)) My d is hoping to do a summer internship in an education-related field. The guy who looked at her resume in her school’s Career Center told her she could submit any of her academic papers as a writing sample. But is that a good idea? She sent me a few for my opinion on which to submit. They’re all fairly long (8-10 pages) and on the, um, dry side. Her college app essays were shorter, of course, and more enjoyable to read. Is it out of line to send something like that, or is a college-level paper the way to go? Should she shorten one of these, if that’s the best option?

Many thanks for any advice.

I’m not so sure she should send a 8-10 page writing sample, unless 1) she’s going to be in a position where she is expected to write and 2) she was asked to submit this. Usually a one-two page application essay is enough as a writing sample.

Then again, I’m not someone who works in a career Center. Why not call one of them and ask what they think.

Thank you, limabeans. That’s my take on it, as well. Though this particular internship requires a cover letter, resume, and writing sample, not an application-specific essay. She asked the Career Center guy, whom she described as seeming not too enthused about his job.
Though he did tell her that her resume, which she was anxious about, was in presentable shape. I’ll email her and suggest that she call the Center or maybe ask some friends who are also applying to summer internships.

Any additional suggestions?
