D just called us with the news that her summer internship is located in an area not accessible by public transportation. Yikes! We need another car for just 10 weeks. She is studying abroad beginning in August, so a car purchase is not really a practical solution. Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a short term lease for a reasonable amount of money? We could purchase a car, then turn around and sell it, but we would pay taxes, licensing, etc. and face the unknown resale value. Suggestions?

you can rent a car by the month, and it’s not incredibly expensive (esp if you rent a cheapish car). Your D could then drive your car-- since she probably can’t drive the rental car, and if she can it would be much more expensive.

Umpteen years ago a friend of mine leased a car for the summer - or maybe her folks leased it for her. I’m with ec1234 though on this, check with your auto insurance. It might be more favorable if she has your car and you have the rental/lease.

Thanks for your suggestions! Since I work a flexible schedule, we are now thinking of handling this on a week by week basis or even day-by-day! Some days I may even be dropping S off at his job and getting his bicycle out of the minivan for the trip home! If we can avoid those leasing costs for even a week or two, we will try to do so.

We are just happy that both kids have jobs! Three vehicles for 4 people will have to work.
