Suggestions needed - new oven

We always buy from a local appliance store and that store has its own service people. It’s one reason we use them.

Not a Thermador! The repairs costs between $400-800 plus parts. Not to mention few can do it. It was here when we moved in. Lots of issues and wasn’t very old. We cook a lot so has been costly and the oven and stove top combo would costs thousands to replace.

One comment on Miele - I used to be a huge fan of their products but the local service folks finally wore me down. Miele won’t let anyone other than their own technicians install or service their machines - fine in theory but it means you end up with prima donna technicians and if you need service you have no choice but to put up with whatever **** they sling. As long as you don’t need repairs, you are fine but once you do - you’re stuck. I will be buying new kitchen appliances soon and I’m going with Kitchenaid ovens and fridge (I replaced my Miele DW with a Bosch already).

Repair people don’t always go for the more cost efficient route. A 50 cent capacitor is what it took for Mr. to repair our Thermador oven control panel that was going dim. Most older ovens had this problem - capacitors in electronic control panels would dry out because of the heat. Repair folks would not replace a part in the panel - they would just stick a new panel in. $500 plus labor. When the capacitor began to dry out for the second time, Mr. decided to replace it preemptively, but our tortie knocked the panel onto the floor breaking it. Then we found out that Thermador no longer made control panels for 16.5 yr old ovens… The ovens were in awesome shape and cooked very evenly but could not be repaired because of this. I then researched the issue, and some makers solved that issue by diverting heat away from the panels. Then we decided to go with 2 separate ovens, and Miele had the best steam oven available that was pricy but not at the Gaggenau level. So we added a regular oven on the bottom, and that was it.

We replaced the rusted 18 yr old Dacor oven in this house with the same Miele combo.

“Miele won’t let anyone other than their own technicians install or service their machines…”

Absolutely not true. Mr. B installed and serviced our dishwashers just fine. They will also sell parts to anyone.

I had a dacor oven with a microwave convection combo- VERY expensive to repair and electronics broke easily- within 5 years??
I have a meile that came with our current home- it heats unevenly and the thermostat does not correlate to the in-oven tempurature. I have an oven thermometer in the oven so I can see what temp it really is inside.
I would go for something large and with as few electronics as possible.

The original cook top, ovens, and DW in our house were Thermador. By the time we got them they were probably 15 yrs old at least, and they proceeded to break down, one by one and had to be replaced.

Our sterling appliance repair guy told me that Thermador parts were extremely expensive. I found out he was right when I tried to replace the burner pans and heat shield assemblies : 4 burners, $700.

I am leery of Thermador as a result. It’s not that I expect stuff to last forever, but the repair costs are very high.

We have a 27" space and had a double oven thermador for 19 years and loved it. Bought the replacement a few months ago and I don’t know why they changed it. Not only is it less attractive (redesigned styling) but the cleaning function barely seems to work and the touch pad keys and the way you have to turn on and off each oven drives me nuts. I don’t know if you would have more options in a 30" but I, sadly, would not recommend what we bought. Doesn’t sound like you’re considering Thermador but, if you are, I can confirm the style number.

Waving hi to you ignatius - new ovens fun. We have original to house ( almost 20 years old) double GE profile ovens.
Had to have one repair of motherboard 15’years ago - cost maybe $300 ( not sure now )

We didn’t build the house so they GE profile appliances were all here.
Replaced dishwasher with Kitchenaid
Microwave replaced with GE profile

Waving back at you @SouthJerseyChessMom. We have a GE Monogram over 20 years old and they no longer make the control panel - touchscreen. We have to get a new oven. Right now the oven light either turns on and won’t turn off for days or won’t turn on at all, seemingly at whim. The repairman said that that it’s a first step in that slide to the oven either not turning on or off. So right now we can still use the oven but need to look for a new one. Luckily I have some time to find what I want rather than needing it yesterday.

Here is some oven reliability data from an appliance store that does their own repairs.

Thank you. Our issue has temporarily resolved itself, so we’ve bought some time. We need to go luck. I like the KitchenAid blue interior (which I realize might not be the best way to choose an oven but still). Anyway, getting to an appliance store, with all suggestions and input received here in mind, should be the next step.

When we redid our kitchen in our last house (about 15 years ago) we put in a KitchenAid double wall oven and I loved it. When we moved to our current house, the appliances were all Viking except for the fridge. I hate the oven! It takes forever to preheat. But it works, so no plans to replace it right now.

I have a Gaggenau double oven - two houses with this brand, and find it hard to beat. Perfectly even baking and roasting, and haven’t needed a repair in 20 years. The only thing I dislike is setting the clock - it’s a crazy sequence that I can never remember.

Here is a wall oven buying guide. It could be good prep for a visit to the appliance store

Wanted that Gaggenau steam oven but controls freaked me out. Miele’ s controls are touchscreen, so was a bit cheaper and easier to operate. God forbid we ever get an oven that could stream Spotify or be controlled via my iPhone.

@bunsenburner - I seem to remember that the Jenn-Air is controlled by Alexa… :slight_smile:
