Suggestions needed - new oven

It looks as though a new oven is in our immediate future. We’ve lived in this house 20 years and have replaced most major appliances by now. I guess it’s the oven’s turn.

Anyway, I’ve never oven-shopped, so any suggestion will be helpful, from what’s currently popular to good brands. I am replacing a double wall oven - self cleaning.

For what it’s worth, I bought my dishwasher after following a thread here and couldn’t be happier with it.

Suggestion … advice … please.

Do you mean wall oven or range/oven unit?

I have a double wall oven.

What is the size of the current oven? 30 inches?

If you can, go with 2 separate ovens. It will require a shelf in between but will save the headaches of replacing the entire unit later on. We replaced 2 double wall ovens in that manner. Went with a 30 inch large regular convection oven and 24 inch plus trim smaller steam combioven.

Current size 30 inches

If possible, avoid GE or at least CAREFULLY read the warranty information (and compare to other brands). I spent a LOT of money in our kitchen remodel on appliances and went with GE Monogram on fridge, stovetop, double ovens. Fridge up and died one day and it has been a nightmare to get service and the parts together at the same time. Their service org is a complete disaster - parts have been on backorder since Jan. The service dispatch is separate from the parts group, the customer service line doesn’t afford Monogram customers any extra level of service after 1 yr of product use. I cannot get a straight answer from that customer service about when the parts and the service guys will be at my house - one person says this date and the other says a date four days out… I will never buy GE again. It is just that bad.

You probably know this… Go with a brand that would match the price point level of the other appliances and can be appealing to the buyers of you are thinking about selling sooner than later. Don’t put in a Gaggenau oven if the rest of appliances are Whilpool and vice versa.

GE factory service is from a third party vendor. If you buy GE locally always request service from the store.

i think you should base your decision on fit variables like:

  • Color
  • Gas vs. Electric
  • Flat surface vs. coils
  • Dials vs. Buttons
  • Weight/difficulty of installation
  • Price
  • Reliability

My mother and os have had good luck with kitchen aid.

My mother had to replace her wall oven and built-in microwave last year, and we decided on KitchenAid. I’ve looked at them for years and think they are good quality–things like the racks sliding out a tad more easily that some other brands–and the styling inside and out is very attractive. I confess I am a sucker for blue interiors! The prices are not wildly over the top.

If I had the choice of ANY wall oven with price no object, I would look at french door wall ovens. Some of the actual professional brands like American Range have been making them for a long time, in recent years, some of the higher end “professional for the home” brands have joined in.

I have used the industrial gas version of these ovens cooking at a soup kitchen, and the door arrangement is just SO GREAT! not having to lean over a big door when putting things in or taking them out or checking to see if they’re done is wonderful.

I think that for wall ovens electric is preferable. The original wall ovens in my kitchen were Thermador, and the top one was vented to the outside. That was a great feature. I have no idea how widely available it is. The lack of direct outside ventilation is a huge kitchen negative to me. I like an arrangement where the range with broiler is under the hood, and perhaps a wall oven is reserved for baking that doesn’t produce smoke.

I recently replaced my oven and got the KitchenAid convection based on recommendations from people I know. I am more thrilled with the oven than I expected, I cooked holiday meals on it and love the huge glass window and bright light. They turkey looked like a magazine ad in there! It’s pretty new, but I have been quite pleased with it, including the blue interior

+1 on KitchenAid. We installed their appliances in the previous house and were pleased.

A notch above, Thermador would be the way to go.

A notch above that is Miele, and Gaggenau would be tippy-top.

not to derail - but @materS can’t get service under warranty from the retailer - basically sealed components failed and nowhere to get that except from mfgr and their authorized svc arm - eg I am stuck. 6 people - 2 months without service on a $6.5K fridge. Seems like mfgr likes to look good at pt of sale but doesnt give a crap a year later. Maybe they are all like this.

My refrigerator is KitchenAid - black. My dishwasher is Bosch - black. My microwave is Frigidaire - black. Looking online yesterday, I liked the Bosch side-swinging door but it only comes in stainless steel and I think I should stick with black. I liked the KitchenAid with the blue interior so am pleased to see the thumbs up. I also like the Miele. For what it’s worth, I’m not much of a cook and when I am it’s seldom for over 5-7 people.

All info is quite helpful so thanks to all posting. Keep going.

@prezbucky

Agree with these, but as a baker, I would strongly add

  • Interior capacity (can you fit two cookie sheets on the same rack at the same time? How big a turkey will it fit?)
  • Convection option?
  • Self-Cleaning?

As a baker, when our last oven died (it shorted and fried the computer board) we did not have a lot of time to research a new one, so we ended up getting a floor sample that had been marked down at Home Depot. DH had the brilliant idea to save the wire racks from the old oven, as they fit perfectly. So now I can bake cookies on 4 racks at the same time - which makes the xmas cookie season a breeze.

It is a good idea to get a new power cord - don’t reuse an old one if it is 20 years old.

I had KitchenAid double ovens in my previous house and they were fine. Currently have Dacor and also happy with it. We had them serviced once and the service guys came out within a few days and took care of the problem on the spot (broken spring), so no issues at all with local service.

When we first had the ovens installed we had the temp checked and the service guy said it was dead on. Just checked with my own thermometer recently (12 years later) and they’re low by 25F, which is pretty good assuming my thermometer is accurate of course. Oddly enough I’ve always found they cooked slightly fast when baking cakes and such, so I’m surprised to see them reading low.

Side swinging doors are a great feature on the upper oven. Would highly recommend that.

KitchenAid uses the same service firm as GE. I used them for a DW under warranty. They would come out and tell me I needed a new control panel. They replaced three control panels. I don’t think they ever did any diagnostics, just ordered and installed new control panels. They finally replaced the DW.
