Suggestions plezse for gettign rid of chipmunks and red ants in the yard!

Ok-- so I am off to Home Depot to get more Red Ant killer and something to get rid of all the chipmunks that have made themselves at home in and around our house foundation. I am looking for the easiest and if possible kindest way to get rid of the chipmunks. The red ants will get the spectracide or (whatever) pellets thrown on the mounds. I’ve gone through 2 bags already!

So far I’ve gotten a box of mothballs to deter the little chipmunk buggers, but ran out before getting the back yard done. Is there a better way? We dont have dogs or cats so I am not worried about the mothballs being eaten by pets. I am not willing to trap and remove the little critters, and would prefer to avoid the “lure them with pumpkin seeds into a bucket of water where they will drown” route, as that seems cruel and I don’t want to deal with disposing of dead chipmunks. Any other ideas? Help!

I am about to head to the store. Suggestions anyone??? Not wanting little traps or planks with pumpkin seeds to buckets all over my yard

Snakes. Or maybe cats. That’s about all I’ve got. :)

From a website:

But are they really harmful? We have them all over and I’ve never noticed any damage from them.

I used to have chipmunks at our old house and I miss watching them. I wish other people liked them too. Please don’t drown them.

I’m feeling your pain. The rabbits are back, and I’m thinking they’re less and less cute each year. Last Sunday I put in 36 batchelor’s buttons (my favorite annual) at $1.99 a pop. Within two days, they’d already sampled three of the plants. I have a rabbit/deer deterrent spray that I’ve been spraying on the plants every other day (they recommend once every two weeks around the perimeter of your yard), starting a couple of days after I noticed them. We’ll see if it slows them down.

And we DO have a dog.

Thanks, everyone.

Booklady- I saw that website too, and am prepared to do hot sauce/pepper if the mothballs don’t work. the guy at Home Depot also said peppermint extract works too, and that might smell better than the mothballs.

They were cute last year-- except the one that got in the house. He ran wild in the house for about a week or 2 (we couldn’t corner the little bugger)-- then was found by
my s’s friend in the pantry… feet up :(

This year there are a ton of them-- and there ar holes all over our gardens and against the foundation. Its no longer cute or safe. And yes-- they’ve been eating all the flowers, just as Teriwtt said.

Used up all the red ant killer we had on the front of the house-- switched brands (from Sprectracite to Amdro per the guy at the store) for the back of the house. Stay tuned-- I’ll keep ya posted.

No buckets and walking the plank-- but also NO SNAKES!

We have them here, eating the birdseed. Not feeling overrun by them here. I have used cinnamon (cheap generic) sprinkled around to distract dogs from our lawn. You might try that. They might like cinnamon, who knows.

Cinnamon is supposed to deter the chipmunks or the dogs? Its gonna smell like dessert out there!

What’s wrong with chipmunks? They’re so cute. What problems are they causing?

Cardinal-

Please take a look at several posts above. Chipmunks are vermin-- they dig multiple holes (I put mothballs in at least 12-15 holes around the foundation of my house today) and they dig up the plants and eat them. The have gotten into the house too. At least the rabbits don’t live under the house or make housecalls.

Ya want them? They are cute for a little while. I’ll see about those humane traps and set them up for a road trip. Where shall we deliver them?? :)

But they can (and do) live under your deck (our dog won’t go under the deck)! And their feces make for an tasty appetizer for dogs.

jym - we’ve used Amdro for years. Thought everyone did!

No problem with chipmunks here; we have squirrels, though. Had to put gutter guards on the house last year to keep them out of the attic.

Be careful with those. They’re trouble if they get into the wild, just like their cousin knapweed.

I have knapweed, doesn’t seem that invasive here.

binx-
The stuff Home Depot sold us before is made by Ortho. Thats on the front lawn. The Amdro is in the backyard. I guess I am doing a little experiment-- will see which kills the ants and the queen faster. So far the hills I sprinkled a few weeks ago went away, but new ones popped up al over the place. Apparently the fire ants and chipmunks are coexisting quite well.

teriwtt-
Our neighborhood was overrun with rabbits for a few years, but they must have moved up to bigger homes in fancier subdivisions and rented out their huts to the chipmunks!

As much as I wish they would seed over during our winters, they just will not. Have never had even one stray plant come up in the bed I always plant them in.

what’s wrong with chipmunks? they are eating (ior digging holes into) my wooden retaining walls, which will soon stop retaining.

we had an outdoor cat for a year - (she wanted to be an indoor cat but didn’t like the other cat, the dog, the litter box or the drapes) - during that time we had very few chipmunks.

There was one by my front door this morning. They are no longer cute, in my eyes. As memphismom said,t hey are destructive.

It rained hard here last night, so am not sure what that does to the mothballs. May have to move on to hot sauce or peppermint.
