I’m trying to figure out what classes I want to take next semester, and I think my advisors are going to want me to satisfy my math requirement. I took two weeks of AP Calc BC in high school but then dropped to honors, so I don’t have any credit already. I was hoping I could test out of it or use my SAT I/II scores, but I’m not sure that’s possible. I do really like math, I guess I’m just more interested in other courses, so this req is getting in my way.

I have a friend who’s taking Interactive Mathematics, I believe… and really is not a fan. And I kinda want to take a course that will actually be useful instead of one just to get my req out of the way.

I’m an undeclared freshman, but I believe that I’m going to declare an International Affairs major very soon.

Take any class with Robert Lupi. He is the man.

blink, If you are planning to go onto gad school afterward (top tier), particularly MBA or law school I would partake in an additional major, preferably a difficult one. Right now i am on track to major in four subjects which are finance, spanish, political science, and mathematics. Math is a good major to have so maybe take that up if your interested.

(I just realized I lied-- my frirend doesn’t like Mathematical Thinking… I don’t really know anything about Interactive Mathematics.)

I am perhaps considering going to law school. I’m going to declare my International Affairs major, then perhaps do the the dual major w/IAF and Poli Sci… but I want to do the Latin America track of the IAF major, so I figured I’d do a Spanish minor (in Advanced Spanish 1 right now). BUT, I’m also considering the new Social Entrepreneurship (…if I can learn how to spell it :)) minor.

So I’ve got a lot of goals and no clue how many will come to fruition. I just want to get this Math (level 1) requirement out of the way for now… but I know that I should probs know what I’ll be doing in the future so I don’t have wasted credits or anything.

Calculus is such a widely taken course, that if you don’t take it, you might look much lower compared to other students in co-op or in grad school. It’s hard, but worth it in my opinion.

If I were in your position I’d probably check the math offerings, then use course evals/rate my professor to choose the course with a good professor.

Calc always looks/sounds good, and it’s not too bad if you’ve taken it in high school. Calc I is equivalent to AP Calc A/B, so it would be a repeat of things you already know…

One of my friends is planning on law and is triple majoring in History, english, and mathematics. I think math shows your capacity for problem solving and my advisor would tell anyone that multi variable calc is a must for anyone planning on grad school. NEU sent 2 students for Harvard 2+2 MBA program last year which is what i am hoping for after i graduate, and both students had hard science type of majors, at least from what my advisor has told me…

Thanks for the input everyone!

During orientation this summer, I asked to be put in Calc I but my advisor kept telling me not to (I talked to a few other people she advised and they all said she clearly had something against math). I think that may be the best option. My high school honors calc teacher told me to go for Calc II, but I think Calc I may be in my best interest.
