suicide rates among US colleges

do you guys know high suicide rates among colleges?

i heard from my friend that cornell had high suicide rates.

am i right?

That’s a rumor that’s probably not entirely true, although…

Suicide rates in college seem to be overly highlighted. The highest suicide rates, I’ve read, are among the elderly.

I hope no schools have a high suicide rate. That would just be horrible. What do you define as high here anyway?

William and Mary has the highest in the country.

thanks for the updates!

Yeah…Cornell’s suicide rate is around the national average. Search the Cornell forums for sources; I’m too lazy to look for them myself.

is it because of the depressing rural life? maybe. or tooo much work? maybe

I thought Cornell’s suicide rates were less than the national average, and many of those who commit suicide there arnt students.

^What are the sources of this data?

i was told that Cornell’s suicide rate isn’t necessarily higher… it’s just more spoken about, almost more “glorified” there I guess (for lack of a better term), because of the gorges in Ithaca, NY. People who commit suicide there tend to jump off the gorge. It’s a lot more dramatic than some other methods of commiting suicide. That’s what a lady told me when I visited there. It’s sad either way though :(

“What are the sources of this data?” - Just info from guys off the Cornell forum. I think one was sparticus800.

UT appearently used to have issues with people jumping out of their clock tower… Can people go up there at all anymore? I know they closed it off a long time ago after the famous sniper situation, but don’t recall if it reopened.

The suicide rate really doesn’t matter…if anything, the rate is extremely small at every university and the deviation is maybe one or two kids every five years.

Honestly, unless your mentally unstable or you have diarrhea during the MCATs, there’s no reason why you should even contemplate suicide. Remember, grades aren’t everything (well they kind of are, but don’t jump!)

In terms of Cornell, after 3-4 years of engineering/science at a grade deflated school, those gorges look pretty tempting…

Just kidding, I don’t go to Cornell. :)

Apparently Cornell has a bridge which students tend to jump off. George Washington had a problem I believe a few years ago. I’ve also heard CMU has the 2nd highest workload/2nd highest suicide rate in the country.

This has nothing to do with the rates, but there was a famous incident about an MIT suicide a few years back. Googling it might be interesting.

…

i think MIT has the highest rate of suicides…

MIT had that girl who set herself on fire.

are you joking?
