Summer 2016 Internship Question

I am planning to major in economics when I head off to college this fall, and during this coming summer I would really like to take part in an internship to attain experience. I found one internship that sounds really interesting, but it is at a magazine and relates more to journalism. Would it make sense to pursue this opportunity?

If it sounds interesting to you and isn’t extremely difficult to apply to, I say go for it. You can apply to internships in your currently targeted career field too, and see which ones (if any) you get. At that point, you can decide what to do. Even if you’re a stellar high school student, it can still be tough to get (good) internships.

It gets difficult iif you’re offered the journalism internship and need to accept or decline before you find out about other internships. I don’t think I can tell you what to do in that scenario, since it depends on your personal risk aversion level, the internship itself, your current level of interest in both fields, and other factors.

One tip: think twice before locking yourself down into one subject / career field at this point in time. I came into college thinking I was going to study Economics too, disliking it, and changing to Engineering. Don’t be afraid to try new things that aren’t necessarily related to what you, right now, envision you want to do later.
