Summer Apartment in Mumbai

My son has a three month internship in Mumbai this summer and needs to find a place to live. I’m not familiar with Mumbai but believe the area would be South Mumbai. The firm that hired him isn’t being too helpful so thought I’d try the CC experts.

Any suggestions for a furnished (and maybe serviced) apartment (or room in an apartment) that wouldn’t strain a college student’s budget? Is there an Indian equivalent to Craig’s list that’s reliable?

Will ask my friend there and get back. Where is the office? and whats the budget?

Thanks, pixel. All I know is South Bombay. I can’t help much with the budget as I don’t know the prevailing rates. There’s a possibility of sharing with another intern as well.

My S is leaving for a 10 week internship in Mumbai on May 18th. He has no place to live as yet, but if he figures it out before he leaves, I’ll be sure to let you know. He has been in touch with some local people, and there is apparently a substantial ex-pat community where there are often sublets, rooms etc. available. I don’t know what area he is looking in either, but I will ask him.

Have you contacted the poster named Mini? He has a lot of contacts in India.

There is an actual craigslist Mumbai that he could look at:

Thanks, everyone. runnersmom, please let me know what your son ends up doing.

I saw this online. There is a cell number you can sms starting with 91.

Waiting for friend to revert. Ymca is a few thousand rupees per night, not cheap. Service apts are few and very expensive. Paying Guest/Share will be ideal. It really comes down to where the office is as traffic and pollution is very bad. Better to live as close as possible or a bus ride away.

momrath, I will definitely keep you posted. He leaves NY on the 18th and hopes to have things in place by the 25th. When does your son leave and for what period of time will he be in Mumbai?

My son will leave around the 25th and plans to stay in Mumbai until the end of August.

My son just told me his office is on Charney (sp) Road and he’s looking to live in Bondra (sp) West. I have no idea if any of that means anything to anyone here.

momrath - My S arrived in Mumbai last night. Prior to departing he found information about a possible room situation on the yahoo expats message board for India. He made contact before leaving the US, checked it out today and will probably be taking it. If that had not worked out, he had found a reputable broker (Or so he had hoped! He had dealt with people from my son’s grad school before.) that deals in paying guest situations. The link for that broker is: [Supergrowth - Real Good Real Estate](http://www.supergrowth.in/) If you would like details about where my son found housing, costs etc., please feel free to PM me.

This is what my friend came up with. If that is Churney Road and he wants to live in Bandra, he will have to take a train. It is a nightmare getting on and off the trains. Have to be very cautious with pick pockets and crowds.

Wish your kids all the best!! It is going to be an experience.

Charni Road is near Marine Drive I think. It is better to live near Churchgate/Colaba/CuffeParade/Kemps Corner area and take a bus.

My son is working on Charni Road, but actually found a place in an apartment in Churchgate on the park. He takes the train 2 stops, but says it’s like reverse commuting. He found his place on a yahoo ex-pats message board. I don’t know where momrath’s son is working.

Hi, send me a message… I would suggest he contact the teachers at the American School- who go home in the summer. Probably someone will rent to him. I have a contact or two! I also have a local Doc friend who might be able to help!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and advice. My son will arrive in Bombay over the weekend. He decided to go with a temporary accommodations and look further when he has a better idea of what’s where. I may come back with more questions then.

Update, son arrived in Bombay (no one calls it Mumbai, he’s told) and is staying at a budget hotel with fantastic harbour views. He’s looking for a more permanent place and is considering a “paying guest” arrangement, whereby you rent a room in a private house. We were charmed by the explanation in the agent’s website posted by runnersmom: Guest is next to God.

It’s going to be a fun summer.
