Summer @ Brown 2012

Hi All!

I’m doing the Pre-College Summer @ Brown for 2012 and I am SO excited! I’d love to hear feedback from people who’ve done the program before (especially on what courses you liked/didn’t because there are SO many to choose from!) and also to start a dialogue with other people who are going this summer.

A little about myself…I am going to be a junior next fall and I am going to be at Brown from July 9th to August 3rd. I’m from Westchester County in NY ! I’m currently signed up for just Invisible Cities and Ideal States, but I’m registering for more soon, and I literally can’t wait for Summer@Brown 2012!!

I’m from Westchester NY too! No idea what I want to take though… like you said, so many courses!

Just curious, will a class run no matter how many people are signed up for it? Thanks!

well your class will most likely be mixed with actual Brown students, but the answer is no. Some classes do get canceled. More than likely, though, it’ll be fine. I know the class I’m in (with Summer@Brown kids) is going to be running (Human Evolution) cuz there’s already 4 registered.

^ This applies only for the summer college credit courses. dk bout those pre-college only ones. seems to be a lot so if they were to all be active, I’d be surprised.

I did Summer@Brown last summer and it was the best experience of my life! I took the “Harry Potter: Is it really literature?” course. It sounds totally ridiculous, but it was amazing! Basically, we took every form of literary analysis and used it to tear apart the last Harry Potter book. I go to a public high school in California where most people don’t care too much about school, and it was incredible to be in an environment like Brown where everyone is so driven and smart. I met amazing people from all over the world. I know people who did classes involving medicine and science, and they absolutely loved them. Pretty much, as long as it’s a topic that you’re interested in, you’re going to have an amazing time. You will meet so many people. All of the girls who were on my floor are amazing, and I still keep in contact with almost all of them. I don’t regret doing Summer@Brown for a second and I would recommend it to anyone! But be warned, you will absolutely and completely fall in love with the school. I know I did, and I ended up applying early decision and, unfortunately, didn’t get in. Regardless, Summer@Brown was an amazing experience, and I would do it again in a heartbeat! :)

Wow, Summer at Brown seems interesting! It’s my first time joining summer programs overseas, and well, I would really appreciate if someone could answer some questions of mine? I just don’t want to go into the course like a headless chicken and end up wracking some huge havoc up :P

So uhmm, do a lot of students take the psychology courses or are they a rather eh, neglected course? Sorry, I don’t really know how to phrase this properly. Because from what I have seen/observe, it seems a lot of students are gunning for the science courses or the writing ones… And uhmm, are there a lot of international students there? Maybe from China or India or uhmm, i don’t know, Germany, Greek? And how would you describe the student life there? Are there like cliques or student groups or is it generally one big group of students together?

Thanks! (:

Dracolis,
You have to remember that there are THOUSANDS of people at Brown at any given time for Summer@Brown. No matter which class you choose, there are going to be plenty of other people interested in the same thing. If you’re interested in Psychology, take a Psych class. There will be others in the class with the same interests as you and you’ll love it.
As far as international students, they are definitely present. On my floor, there were a total of about 16 girls, myself and the RA included. Of those, two of them were international (one from England, one from China). I know that there were many others outside of our hall. You’ll meet people from all over the world.
Student Life: I would say there definitely aren’t cliques. Everyone tends to group together with the people on their floor, simply because you don’t know anyone else, but everyone I met was very friendly, whether they were from my class, my hall, or classmates’ of my hallmates. There are some people who actually go to Summer@Brown with their friends, so they tend to stick together, but most people are in the same boat and are just trying to meet new people. The first day of two was very scary. I was about 3000 miles away from home, in a place I had never been, where I knew exactly no one. It was terrifying. But when I started to get to know the girls on my floor, we ended up having the greatest time. We became such close friends, and we still text eachother, facebook eachother, and visit each other all the time. You’ll meet people at Brown who will be your friend for the rest of your life.
Hope this helped! If you have any other questions, feel free to send me a private message, or ask it on this thread. :)

Thanks, your post really helped me out a lot. (: I must admit, I am a bit afraid of the idea of going so far away from home (7900 miles away!), and I have never went to a summer camp like this before, so I don’t really know what to expect…

So, are you going for any of the summer courses this year? xD

Anyone going from 17th june to 29th June?? I am really excited for this :D

I might be going for the Culture and Human Behaviour course from the 18th of June to the 6th of July. What course are you signing up for? :D

Quantum revolution in technology. :D

wow o.0 Those are some ‘deep’ words! xD By the way, I sent you a private message already, but I’m not sure whether you are going to receive multiple copies of the same email, because i accidentally clicked the reply button a few times… So… yea (:

hey everyone. i’m mumana (moo-mah-nah), and i’m going to be a junior next year. i’m going to be at brown from june 17-july 7, and i’m going to take this class called neuroscience in health and disease. i am soooo excited!!! hope to see some of you there.

Hi everyone! My name is Luciana and I’ll be taking ‘So You Think You Want to be a Doctor’ at Brown this summer. This specific course runs from June 17th to July 6th. Words can’t even express how excited I am to go to Brown. I can’t wait to meet people that share the same interests as me, and I also cannot wait to be away from home because I’m very independent. (:

I wish I was going back this year, but I’m graduating in a few weeks and then off the college. I wish I had discovered Summer@Brown sooner so I could have gone multiple years!

MumanaA: I’m going to the Neuroscience one too at the same time as you!!! Yay! I found someone taking the same course as me!! I’m so excited

I know I know, my apologies for reviving a dead post, but I have a question…

On my registration status on the connect.brown.edu page, when I click on the ‘active registration’ tab, it says that my ‘The following classes are not officially considered complete for transcript purposes. Additional information is available by selecting hyperlinked data.’

I try clicking onto my course tab, but there is nothing inside to indicate that my classes are not official? It’s a bit confusing, and I would really like to get to the bottom of it, because I have to apply for a visa and it’s a huge hassle…

So… many thanks in advance to anybody who can help me with this problem! :D

Dracolis, it is just that your class is not for college credits, so your class status will be incomplete until you are assigned a grade in that particular course( From the CE office ).
Anyway, if you would have had a problem in registering for that class, the class details would not have shown up on your schedule.

Hey, everyone  i’m a freshman (girl)and i’m doing the so you think you want to be a doctor course  I’m excited but also kind of scared cause I feel like I might be the youngest there. Has anyone done this before? or is anyone doing the same course as me? Or anyone the same age, going from june16-july8? message me! xoxo
