Summer Camp Counselor for 8 weeks = enough work experience for cornell hotel school?

Hi everyone,

The title basically explains my question. I know most applicants to the hotel school have lots of work experience in hotels, restaurants, etc…but due to this tough economy, the only job I could find is as a camp counselor for 8 weeks this summer. Is that enough work experience?

Thanks!

This summer is the only summer (or time) you have worked? Camp counselor isn’t bad, but it’s not exactly hotel school oriented, IMO.

If you word it the right way, why not?

Honestly, I can’t say this with the utmost certainty but chances are not every single student in the Hotel School (~850 kids) had experience in the Hotel Industry prior to enrolling.

With a camp experience, you could talk about being in a position of leadership, coordinating events, facilitating multiple networks and systems underneath you (afternoon snacks, nap-times, bathroom breaks, etc), being responsible for the specifications of people being checked in and out; although not exactly running a hotel, these are all facets of the hotel business which you can correlate to your specific experiences and use as very solid personal justification for why you feel the Hotel School is the right school for you.

Exactly what roneald said.
