Could somebody here recommend me a good program for a 15-year-old foreign student who wants to spend the summer in the US? His parents have asked me to help them create a list of possible programs, but to be honest, I don’t know where to start! The student’s English is not perfect, but fluent, so the program does not necessarily have to be geared towards learning English. At his level, I believe he can absorb English by osmosis.

Youth For Understanding is a good program, although I do not know if they serve kids that young. AFS also, of course. Does he want to be in a very structured program with a homestay, or does he want something looser? We and some friends hosted some kids for a few weeks one summer. There were no organized activities, other than what the host families felt like putting together, while they were staying with us. I think that part of the trip was organized touring of some cities, though. Unfortunately, I can’t recall the name of the program.

We went through Youth For Understanding and hosted a student from Germany. THey did a good job preparing the exchange students and supporting the students and the host families.

Also many residential summer camps accept campers from other countries. If the parents get in touch with the closest office of EducationUSA, the counselors there may have a list of camps that they are familiar with. https://www.educationusa.info/centers.php

I agree with happymomof1. If his English is passable there are tons of camps and programs that would take him. What are his interests.
