Hi, I’m not so new to the forum (I’ve been reading for about a year now), but I signed up recently :D

I was wondering which is essentially better: pursuing your interest in a subject or getting supplementary help/head start in a subject that you are less interested in?

This summer, I am going to CTY, and for me, those subjects are any humanities course and chemistry, respectively. I’ve really enjoyed my past years of CTY, in which I took humanities courses, and I also want to either take Dissent or Logic this year. However, I also want to get a head start in chemistry (science tends to be a weaker subject for me), so I can take AP Chem or at least be somewhat fluent in that subject next year as a sophomore.

So, all things considered, which course would be better for me? Any personal experiences in those courses would be helpful as well. Thanks in advance! :)

I may be going to CTY this summer too, which site will you be attending? Well first off, dissent isn’t offered this year at CTY from what I saw in the new catalogue. But personally for me, CTY isn’t about college admissions, it’s about getting to meet people who are really interesting and get to learn really unique and interesting things in class too so personally I would rather take logic. For college admissions purposes, I think to an extent it might also be helpful to take a humanities course because it shows passion, it’s unique, and it could also provide a basis for some college essay writing. So in short, my opinion is to have some fun this summer and not take chem.

Just to throw this out there… I took chemistry at CTY in 2007, thought I learned absolutely nothing, yet still registered for AP Chem at my school. I got A’s every quarter, on both the midterm and final, as well as a 5 on the AP test. Science has never been a strong point of mine either, but if you put effort into the class, you’ll end up doing well. Also, I believe you’ll have fun at CTY regardless of the class you take (My friend and I created designs on our calculators for the larger part of a week, haha). I took Logic in 2006, and it was a wonderful class though (:
