My D will be interning near Joplin, Missouri this summer and needs to find housing. The housing allowance provided won’t pay for the traditional “rent by the month” apartment complex. Plus, she is working mid-May thru mid-August, and we are hoping to find housing that will be flexible and not make her rent from May 1 through August 31. Have any of you negotiated with apartment complexes to change start/end dates?
Any ideas on ways to locate more flexible housing? And how to figure out safe/not-so-safe parts of town?
If you have lived in or near the southwest corner of Missouri, I’d appreciate your input. I am thrilled she has this opportunity, but she will have to choose a place to live before she ever sets foot in this town, and I want to gather as much factual info as I can.
Perhaps you can check with Missouri Southern State University in Joplin - it says they offer conference and guest housing during the summer months. They might have information on off campus housing options as well.
Have you checked if there are any of the extended stay hotels in the area? My DD stayed in one last summer for an internship in a small NC town. It was nothing glamorous, but it was easy to make arrangements by phone. They offered daily, weekly, and monthly rates for a furnished 2 room suite with a full kitchen. Wi-fi and utilities were included, as well as weekly housekeeping and linen service. Her internship mentor was helpful with regard to confirming a safe location.
Would she be willing to stay in someone’s home? You might be able to find (through church contacts, for example) someone renting a room/bath/kitchen privileges, or m-i-l suite/basement apt., for a very reasonable price.
Second the idea of sublets. D1 has lived in a 10 br house the past 2 years and over 50% of the kids has summer subletters. Maybe she can connect w someone through a local school FB page.
