I just noticed Chedva’s thread and thought I’d post my own. DS has an internship in Chicago (Near North Side) this summer. We are planning to look on craigslist but I’d appreciate any ideas or suggestions from you all.

Any colleges still renting dorm rooms? Long ago when I was a summer intern for a drug co we stayed in college dorms. I think the college has since closed (Lake Forest). Good luck, hope something good works.

The area around the University of Chicago won’t be convenient, but I bet that there are lots of Northwestern or DePaul students with 12-month rentals who would love to sublet for the summer. I know in Hyde Park it’s really a renter’s market for the summer, and summer subletters rarely have to pay full monthly rent. I would see if you can check student bulletin board sites for Northwestern or DePaul.

(Lake Forest is still very much alive, although not exactly in northside Chicago.)

One of the city universities, I think Roosevelt, rents out dorm rooms for the summer. They are located just south of the Loop, which is a very good location. My son, who had an internship in Chicago last summer, used Craig’s list and found plenty of good options. He ended up renting from a Northestern Medical School student in very plush location on the Gold Coast. I’d also recommend looking for summer rentals from DePaul students, as DePaul is in a very good location.

Jefferson Park and Mayfair are safe areas with better parking and CTA/metra access. People are bike commuting, too.

Best to walk in neighborhood and scout for signs on doors. Look in The Reader for info, then walk around.

Thanks, all. A Northwestern sublet was actually my first thought as we have close friends in Evanston. I will look into the other suggestions as well. How close to moving would you suggest looking at Craigslist? I suppose the later it is, the cheaper the rents will be.

If the internship is near north side, the commute from Evanston can be tricky. There is an express train each morning from Evanston, but if his job is not along that train line, it could require a transfer to a bus, which he’d probably like to avoid. (Also, if he likes cities, Evanston is not Chicago.) One important thing to do is figure out transportation. Find out what train or bus line his work place is near, and that will help determine what neighborhoods he should look in.

Northwestern Medical School is on the near north side, not in Evanston. Medical and law students with sublets are likely to be very close to downtown.

He will be working just a few blocks west of the law school.

Also try DePaul sublets. Close to the “el” and in Lincoln Park.

As noted above, lots of off campus Northwestern students would love to sublet their apartments for the summer! I think a lot of these houses are near empty during the summer.

Just to be clear, most of the Northwestern students are in Evanston, which would be a long commute. Only medical and law students are at the downtown campus (which is a great location to work near, by the way!). There isn’t a lot of student housing right around there, as many of the students live in other neighborhoods (it’s an expensive area), although my son got lucky and got a medical students to sublet a room. However, it sounds like he will be working very near the Chicago stops of the Brown and Red lines, both of which service most of the neighborhoods on the north side, including the DePaul campus area. So as long as a potential sublet is within walking distance of one of those two lines, he should be fine.

Thanks, Mythreesons, that is helpful. I will head on over to the CTA website. :)

My D spent Summer 2008 in Chicago interning at the Goodman Theater. We found the Canterbury Court Apts. (in the Gold Coast) for her. It was a furnished studio with a kitchenette, and was very nice. We paid extra to have a window unit AC. It was very well-located near public transportation and shopping. There was a 3-month minimum (don’t know what your time frame is. Clean, etc., not fancy. I envy anyone who gets to spend the summer in Chicago.

I second suggestions by others re wanting to be near the Red/Brown CTA lines.
D was a student at NU Med School campus and ultimately ended up in “Wrigleyville” where MANY other students and young professionals live. If you see ads for that area, it would probably work well for your student. Lincoln Park, which is sandwiched between Wrigleyville and the NU graduate school campus, is also great but can be a little more expensive. The suggestions to check out DePaul students and their housing is excellent as its location would be perfect for your son based on the location as I understand it.

I agree–what a great place to be for the summer!

Hope I can piggyback onto this thread. My son was offered a summer internship with a firm near the Chicago Stock Exchange. Any housing suggestions for a safe, convenient, and fun location to look for sublets? Thanks!

I want to thank fafnir605 for recommending Canterbury Court Apts. I put DS on the waiting list early in the spring. He had not found a place less than a week before his internship started and I was truly thankful that something opened up in the nick of time. We moved him in last weekend.

In case anyone searches this forum next spring I thought I’d share a little more info. The building is on the 1200 block of State, a couple blocks from the action (and noise) on Rush Street. There is a CVS across the street, Jewel (grocery) two blocks away and Trader Joe’s is less than a mile. Oak Street Beach and the lakefront path are just a couple blocks. There is a great farmers’ market half a block away on Saturday mornings. The building has a 24 hour desk, laundry and bike room, and also the old classic elevators, in which you have to close the grill to operate them. (The front elevators are beautiful, brass, I think, and there’s a freight elevator in the back. They provide carts for moving in.) The apartment was very clean and surprisingly spacious. Decently furnished including a good mattress. The tiny kitchen has apartment-sized appliances, a stainless steel counter and good storage. Only complaint was the lack of outlets.

DS can walk anywhere he needs to be (including work) or hop on his bike and take the lakefront path to Millennium Park or the Museum Campus. It is so perfect DH and I are considering taking the last week of his lease, when he will need to be back at school. (There is a three month minimum; rent is $1050 for a studio.)

Thanks, fafnir605!

Calgal, university of Illinois Chicago campus years ago had dorms for rent in the summer. The school is on a cta line so it would be an easy commute.

For those that might have sticker shock paying 1050 a month, there are studios in safe areas for 700 a month or less. Laundry in unit is better than on site. If on site, it’s better if you don’t have to go outdoors to a separate entrance. Is it free or coin operated? Anything is better than dragging laundry to a laundromat and losing your parking place.

Check whether gas and electric are included. Beware first floor units in two flats. You might get stuck paying utilities for all the common areas (halls, basement) and the whole building’s hot water.
